ktgrok Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 A friend just posted she was trying to log her kids into their live virtual school. One got in, the other is just being shown ads while waiting for the teacher. They are streaming ads on the virtual school platform to the kids. how.....how is that okay? It's like something from a dystopian futuristic movie with Keanu Reeves or something. 9 11 Quote
TheReader Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 holy cow. yea, that is not okay. at all. Quote
73349 Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 That's something a superintendent deserves some candid parent feedback about. Quote
mommyoffive Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Not ok. My kids have gone to virtual school for years. That never happens. Quote
Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Isn't this common in a lot of places? I still don't like it. When I was in public school, there was controversy over "Channel One", a business that provided free content and free TVs for schools, as long as the schools showed the Channel One daily news program which included paid advertisements. I believe this went into thousands of schools. 2 Quote

Jean in Newcastle Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Much better to stream puppy and kitty videos while they wait! 2 Quote
Bootsie Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 That is horrible. I complained when our local school put adds on the school buses. When my kids were in public school, I realized that there was a lot of "advertising" that went on. This just opens up an entirely new platform for it. Quote
KungFuPanda Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Tacky. I can see maaaaybe throwing businesses a bone if their only "commercial" is an educational factoid followed by a quick "brought to you by company x." It's not great, but the government can't get it running in time and private companies aren't going to jump through these hoops for free. That's just part of the deal when you choose capitalism every chance you get. Quote

ktgrok Posted August 10, 2020 Author Posted August 10, 2020 (edited) So, it was for an investing firm! Totally weird! I guess aimed at the parents, or just part of the platform and no one thought about it? Get those 1st graders thinking about their 401K now? Meanwhile, I'm hearing horror stories. Classes ending early, so the child clicks on their next "class" but gets in trouble for showing up early. Sound not working. Needing to access an app that wasn't on the school issued laptop, and you can't add anything to them or download apps. Needing to run multiple programs at once, but if you try it crashes the device, so having to use multiple devices. Needing to split screen stuff that won't split screen. Just...a disaster. I had the good grace not to say that our school involved them each doing a lesson on Teaching Textbooks (no technical issues whatsoever), independent reading, and a read aloud I did poolside while they swam. Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 More than one of my facebook friends claim that their public schools doing virtual school are requiring that the students' cameras be on. While I can understand why the teachers want to make sure the student are involved in class, I can see all kinds of problems with this policy. Quote
Jean in Newcastle Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 They are going to have a learning curve to this. Wish that they could utilize what a program like K12 has already worked out, though. Quote

I was going to say, it was a pretty big battle when our district wanted to put ads on busses, but I think the compromise must have been no ads aimed at kids because they're mostly for banks and stuff. 1 Quote
