Selkie Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Good morning! Dh's truck was dead again this morning, despite the new battery that we put in last week. Now we're wondering if it sustained lightning damage, too. It was parked near mine when the lightning strike happened. We're having a mechanic look at it...fingers crossed we won't be having to replace TWO vehicles! office work - lots of it figure out a price for some land we're (hopefully) selling run to town to pick up a couple things - might have one of the kids do it, since I don't have a car vacuum & mop my office mop kitchen put away clean towels dinner: tacos, rice, slaw, sautéed summer squash 5 Quote
Selkie Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Mechanic just left and he believes dh's truck did sustain lightning damage. Dh is on the phone with the insurance company now. Aargh! 5 Quote

SKL Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Howdy, happy Monday! Here's hoping everyone has a productive and low-stress day if possible .... Yesterday's party was a success, though at first everyone was baking in the heat on the rooftop. It was great for the kids to get together, and the parents enjoyed the time to chat also. The cake was delicious - I should know since I ate half of a 1/8 sheet myself. 😛 But I was so tired out that I was ready for bed before midnight. So now that that is behind me, I hope I can focus better on work. Though my kids prevailed on me to let one of their friends sleep over after the party, so I'm not sure how long she'll be here. They make a lot of noise together. I shall do my best to ignore it. Done: A tiny bit of cleaning & a brief work discussion. Yoga. Caught up on calendar, emails, news, and social media. Working on coffee 1. To do: Lots of client work. Make 2 donations. Walk & make kid run. Bills, returns, personal paperwork stuff. Whatever else gets done. 5 Quote

Jean in Newcastle Posted August 10, 2020 Author Posted August 10, 2020 Loaded up two bags of homeschool books to take to the homeschool consignment store. I have tons more to take but I think that I'm going to do it the inefficient way (which is how I do everything in my life). My reasons (which might not be valid) are: I can only handle two heavy bags and I'm already nearing exhaustion and it isn't even noon yet. Also- I have noticed that they are more likely to take everything at the store if you don't overload them. Give them too many choices and they decide that it's too much to put on their shelves. (Don't know if this is accurate but it seems to be like this.) going to test sugars and then eat an early lunch I think. Then I can get on the road (the store is 30 minutes or so away). 4 Quote
Selkie Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 There is a derecho moving across the midwest and we're getting torrential rain. No high winds yet, but we battened down the hatches and brought everything inside that could blow away. Plus, I ran out and picked all the ripe tomatoes before it started! The boys got tornado warning alerts on their phones, and it took us a minute to realize that it was for their college town, which is 45 minutes north of us. Whew... No trip to town today, I decided - it can wait until tomorrow. Going to do office work and a few kitchen things for the rest of the afternoon. 4 Quote
TheReader Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Home. Tutored the 4 yr old; Grandma peeked in just as I was helping the 4 yr old reposition/reglue part of her craft and wasn't super thrilled I was gluing instead of 4 yr old. This because 4 yr old already *had* glued the entire first craft, the word puzzle that went with the 1st craft, and some of these pieces of the 2nd craft, but she kept flipping the piece over between applying glue stick, moving to apply it to the paper, she'd get it upside down (glue-side-up) and it wouldn't stick. So, I flipped over and double checked and re-stuck the pieces just as Grandma was walking in. "What are we doing? And why isn't she doing the gluing instead of you?" :sigh: (I think Grandma was also unimpressed we were making a craft to resemble the 4 yr old's toy dog, but again, this was bonus craft at nearly the end of our last day.....if it takes making her dog to keep her attention, so be it). Had lunch, took a nap, helped DH unload/reload the dishwasher, took the trash out, helped clip kitty toenails/front claws (the one cat gets so long that her claws stick in the carpet when she walks), did successfully get the dinner in the crock pot, and returned a DVD we rented yesterday (hooray for Redbox, boo for the movie). Working on school stuff now. Dug out my master list and just going to plug away. 4 Quote

Jean in Newcastle Posted August 10, 2020 Author Posted August 10, 2020 All of the books in my two bags of consignment were accepted except for one. And that one wasn't a surprise. Stopped at the grocery store on my way home and got groceries. Oh and the pet store too for one thing. Put away groceries. 4 Quote
mom31257 Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 I survived the first day of math classes. I didn't realize the recordings have to convert afterwards, which can take a while. I only had to delay my last class start time because of it. That is just one student, so he was fine with it. The students were very quiet, but I did get a few answers out of them. The Algebra 1 students are seeming slow when it comes to problems with their multiplication facts. They really needed to have them mastered by now so their homework won't take forever. Ds took his chemistry test and missed a couple so, it's a high B. Considering he isn't detailed enough, I supposed that is a good grade. I might give him the alternative test to see how he does on it. We had storms, so I'm thankful we never lost power or wifi. I'll start dinner soon. 4 Quote
Selkie Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 The storm is over. We got tons of rain, but the severe wind and tornado activity was mostly to the north of us. Didn't get much office work done today. My office has floor to ceiling windows and it was lightning like crazy, so I was worried about getting zapped while sitting at my desk. (I don't know if that could even happen, but I'm not taking any chances with lightning these days...) I got dinner mostly assembled this afternoon. Threw away a bunch of newspapers. Our Wall Street Journal hasn't been showing up lately, and when it does, it is 2-3 weeks late. Thanks USPS. Good thing we have an online subscription, too. Moved further along in the car buying process . The internet at the car dealership is down because of the storm, so things are at a standstill for now. Planted a couple trays of microgreens. Did a few loads of laundry and put away towels. 4 Quote

At most when we resume after our break, it will be once/week instead of twice/week, and I may lose the "let's drop to an hour" argument, but I will likewise hold to the "no more than 1.5 hours" argument. Looking at my schedule, though....we'll see if I am able to resume or not, because as much as the extra money is nice, I have to be sure my own kids are getting their education first (and while 2 of the 3 are college, also 2 of the 3 will still require supervision &/or assistance, so, we'll see). And my family will want me to still have time to feed them, keep their clothes clean, etc. 4 Quote

TheReader Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Okay, broke my "do stuff for school" prep list down into a detailed list and schedule based on how many more days I have to get this all done. Did a bunch -- ...made printable labels for the School to Home to School folders ...printed those, stuck them on the folders ...arranged my list/broke it down into chunks ....created 3 sets of pages for my binder/planner (contact info, payment record, attendance pages) ....per the list/schedule, that's enough for today I need to pick a day for my mom to come help print/assemble (or somehow beg off and do it myself, but she really wants to), either Thurs or Fri. I did figure out which of all the college kid classes are synchronous vs asynchronous; going to be fun keeping everyone on track/on schedule. Dh and I need to discuss what to keep DS19 in or not; he's got a heavy load, and all online, that is not going to go well (was originally half in person which would have been good). Taking a break, sewing things, listening to Hamilton Disc 2, and then will be time for dinner and DH & I will watch Alienist finale after. 4 Quote

I need to get back in the kitchen and finish cleaning up. Then, I'll watch more Poldark. I'm almost done rewatching the whole series. I love it so much and wish there were more. 3 Quote
