I continue to enjoy reading about our WTM acceptances. I encourage you to ask for an increase in financial aide. We found that every university my dd contacted  gave her at least a small increase and some quite a bit. We are back at it for grad schools.

I know that is true.  However, the difference between Hamilton/Bucknell and Dickinson is $13,000 a year with a note that the Hamilton aid (no merit scholarships--all institutional need based aid)  would be reduced "drastically" when her older brother graduated.  So a little bit isn't going to cut it.  But, it is good advice in general, and if her first choice (from whom we haven't gotten the financial aid yet) doesn't quite reach what we need, we will definitely appeal.

Congratulations on the acceptances. I hope first choice is an acceptance with great finances.

Was your son also accepted to Bucknell? When I read your first post, I thought I had read something similar a few years ago. (That was the first time I heard of Bucknell, so it stuck with me.)

Yes, he was.  Dh went there and loved it so the first two have both applied and been accepted.  I just told him today that if he wants our third to apply , the application fee can come out of his own personal money and not the homeschool budget because we already know what the financial aid will look like. 🙂

I think I posted here a long time ago.

Ds applied to 11 schools and is down to 6 to choose from, although really it's 5 I think.

Still in the running: Wooster, Allegheny, Messiah, Centre, Hendrix, Clark (I think Clark is the one that he isn't really considering but hasn't declined yet).

He declined: Macalaster, Calvin, Skidmore

He got waitlisted at Hamilton but went ahead and declined the waitlist. He knew it was probably going to be out of our financial reach anyway and I think he wants his decision to be over and done. He got rejected from Swarthmore, which was a reach for him and probably would have been a reach financially. Also, he wants to swim and had never contacted the swim coach there (despite bring gently reminded many times that it might be a good idea.)

We are going to go visit Centre and Hendrix over spring break in a few weeks. And then he'll have to pick. They are all fairly similar and I really don't know if he has a clear favorite. Financially, they came in at a good range. He got a lot of merit aid at all of them and they are all within what we wanted financially. Hendrix is clearly the cheapest, but it's nice that he won't have to make a decision solely on cost. I'm not sure how he is going to decide but I feel good about all 5 choices and think any one will be a good fit for him.

The cost thing is pretty amazing...when he got the acceptance to Skidmore he came down and said "The good news is they gave me a $20K grant but the bad news is they start at $78K". 😬 Crazy.

For anyone reading this who hasn't gotten to the college application point yet, I would second the advice given in other places on this board to have conversations early and often about cost with your kids. Going into the process ds knew that Skidmore, Swarthmore and Hamilton were all likely out of our financial comfort zone. They don't give merit aid (or very little merit aid) and we knew we wouldn't get a lot of need based aid from them. We said it was fine to apply but he never got his heart set on something we couldn't afford. Macalaster was a little bit of a harder one. He liked the coach a lot and had talked to people on the team. And it was more reasonable, but still more than what we were comfortable with. He wasn't super excited about Minnesota though (he doesn't like the cold very much) so that made it a little bit easier.

Not having been able to do visits last Spring/Summer and early Fall really made a difference in school choices. Ultimately, we ended up visiting the two schools that seemed to be good fits and that were under consideration, and had two more that had been visited previously or there had been events at so they felt fairly familiar, and the choice really ended up down to them.

The good news is that we honestly came down to a point (where you are) that there wasn't a bad option left, and ultimately, the choice was made on feel.

I agree!  Our summer/fall was set aside to make dd's final list.  Then, Covid hit.  Both of her schools have students on campus, and we plan to visit in a few weeks.  If we had visited earlier, say 9th/10th grade, I don't think it would have helped much.  She just wasn't at a place where she could have made those types of choices/decisions.  She blossomed her junior year, took extra classes to be college eligible.  We never expected scholarship money, and both schools are pretty even right now in terms of costs.

Dd got waitlisted at Macalester.  According  to the numbers they sent, they only accepted 6% this year. So, she is actually quite pleased.  Now we just wait on one school (her favorite) for financial aid.  So glad to be done with the waiting on admission decisions.

Two other results have come in for ds.

Purdue admitted to his 2nd choice major of Mechanical Engineering Technology. Since he was admitted for Mechanical Engineering at other schools, this one is out of consideration.

Virginia Tech (in state application) waitlisted for Engineering. He accepted the waitlist offer, but has moved on. I suspect the waitlist is quite long this year.

My former preK-12 homeschooler and 2020 electrical engineering college grad got some grad school (PhD program) acceptances and made a decision today. Got into Ga Tech, CU Boulder, and Duke. Decision is for Duke, one of the biomedical engineering labs. Ga Tech probably had the most intriguing lab, but the least appealing (for her interests) location. CU had the best location by far (mountains and snow), and was almost the pick. The lab at Duke was just a bit more aligned with her interests, and the funding was slightly more generous.

In the second round of notifications, DS was accepted to St. Olaf and Denison and wait listed at Grinnell and the University of Richmond. Out of 9 applications, he was only out-right rejected at Bowdoin which was a definite long shot but bittersweet as it was the only school that out right said that he could run if accepted.

In the end, DS has made his decision to attend Drake University in Des Moines over St. Olaf. The Politics program with 4 majors is better than any we looked at with many, many internship, campaign volunteer opportunities, and hopefully working the Iowa Caucuses. DS also prefers the urban, capitol city location of Drake to the small town where St. Olaf is located.

For the parent's point of view, Drake has advantages also. DS has several food allergies. Because of several pre-Pandemic visits with my DDs, I am confident that his allergies will be well accommodated at Drake. Drake is more expensive than St Olaf but over 4 years this difference should be a wash. Drake's tuition promise and DS's scholarship make his future tuition costs known. This is particularly an issue for us as in 2 years as our need will drop significantly when DD2 graduates. At other schools, we would have seen a significant increase in costs but at Drake he will only loose a small grant.

We are all glad to have a decision. I am so glad the DS will be on campus next year. It has been a long year for DS as he has been attending CC virtually for over a year. This kid will thrive on a college campus among same age peers.

In the “they must be desperate” category, L got an acceptance to Oklahoma State. They had offered no application fee back in the fall, but their portal didn’t work on any computer we had. So, we abandoned it. Which means that they sent an acceptance letter (which played the school fight song) based on, literally, clicking a link.

My youngest hasn't really decided what she wants to do in life.  She has been dual enrolled for the last several years at the local community college.  They are giving her a full scholarship to finish her two year art degree and then she will decide from there.  She has about 10 classes left to take.  She is adamantly against student loans and doesn't qualify for any other financial aid.   The state paid for what she has taken so far and now the school is paying for the rest.  Super proud of her.

DD applied to www.WUR.nl for a second year on row. Also for a second year on row she has been accepted conditionally. (That’s how it works in the Netherlands, because of the exit exams in may/june).

She did a Latin-Modern Languages track in homeschool, but needed a math-science track for this University. She tried last summer an ‘exam only’ option but failed 3 / 4 subjects so she is in a kind of community college for adult education now for math, physics and chemistry (she passed biology last summer)

About 2 weeks the central exit exams start and then we will know if she will be accepted unconditionally (after she gets her diploma)

She plans to study biology at WUR.

@RootAnn as you wondered how we were doing...

My daughter was accepted to the University of Puget Sound with Dean & Music scholarships to study vocal performance and journalism.  She's dual enrolled through our local community college. She received her high school diploma last night and next week, an Associate of Arts degree with honors. Super proud of all her hard work. What a journey homeschooling has been for our family. I feel incredibly blessed.

Curious to know what you thought of these? They are relatively close to us. And, where did your DS ultimately decide to go?

Despite living in a border state, I had never heard of Drake University (or the Drake Relays). I'm fascinated because our flagship university here is ranked the same as Drake, but they couldn't been more different in terms of acreage and enrollment size.

I hadn't heard of Grinnell before this past month either. I feel like we don't appreciate our border states enough and need to take some road trips. Lol.

We liked them both a lot. He ended up picking Centre. In the end it came down to Centre and College of Wooster and it was a really hard decision that took up to the very last minute to make.

I liked Hendrix a lot. It felt more quirky that the other places we visited. It’s really small. Every student mentioned the size as both a positive and a negative. We heard a lot of “by senior year you know everyone which is both good and bad”. I thought the campus was very pretty but the immediate surrounding area seemed economically disadvantaged. I wondered if that would create some town/gown tension but when I asked people they kind of avoided the question. They talked about going into the downtown to do stuff (which is not the area it’s located in). The quirkiness seemed a plus to me. Everyone and I mean everyone talked about the freshman dance competition between dorms as a highlight. There is also a specific group that is dedicated to providing more introverted alternatives to big campus wide events. So they said that there is always a game night or something like that going on if you aren’t into the big things. That was kind of nice that it was intentional.

I had thought that ds was deciding between Centre and Hendrix at the end (he was very close-mouthed about his process) but it turned out he knew pretty much after visting that Hendrix wasn’t right for him. It was one of those gut feeling things...which is weird because he is not a gut feeling kind of guy.  The price was definitely right and he liked the swim coach a lot. He is planning on majoring in Math and that might have swayed him, the department is very tiny. But I think it was mostly gut.

Centre feels more traditional collegiate in the way it look and the people we met. It feels more conservative. It’s in a cute small town. I think the main thing that swayed him to choose it over Wooster was one Math professor there that he talked to a lot and who was apparently impressive. Everything else about the two schools was pretty similar and he really liked them both. He also was impressed that every alumnae from Centre that he talked to was incredibly enthusiastic. They sell the school well. Other things we liked: they have a strong emphasis on study abroad- their dining hall is decorated with flags from every country that students have studied in. It’s a lot. It’s also small but not quite as small as Hendrix. Centre does have a Greek system, Hendrix does not.

I'm writing your name down. Lol. I would love to read an update in a couple of years. I will admit that the study abroad emphasis pulled DD and me right in when we happened upon their website last week. The distance from here to Centre is fairly drivable, but I'm not sure being in the middle of Kentucky will work for DD. It's not different enough from our own state and area.

I'm listening to the new Kathy Reichs book, The Bone Code, and she mentions Grinnell. Dr. Brennan asks where a specific person went to college. The response is..."Someplace called Grinnell. I've never heard of it." 😂 I just had to post.

When my son was accepted and people would ask about Grinnell, he often explained the Warren Buffet and Intel connection. Growing up in the Midwest, Grinnell was pretty well known, maybe partly because the town is also called Grinnell. But out here in the PNW, not so much.

@Alice Would you mind sharing any information about a kid wanting to swim and contacting coaches?  My boys are going into 11th and they both swim year round.  One is very interested in swimming in college.  When should he start contacting coaches?  What types of info should he give, ie how long and who he has swam for?  Best strokes?  Times?

Our area is big into swimming (Northern VA) and a lot of kids from here might be looking to swim in college.

Thank you 🙂

I believe @MysteryJen has 1, maybe 2, daughters swimming on college teams. However, it looks like she was last on the boards almost a year ago, so you might post it as a thread on the high school board to ask for info specifically about how to swim for a college team.

Also, you might check out some of the NCAA threads on PAGE 4 of the big "College Motherlode" thread pinned at the top of the WTM College Board. Several of those threads discuss the journey of how/when to contact coaches:

Overview topics
NCAA Eligibility Center: our experience (personal experience)
A high school athlete’s journey (personal experiences over 18 months of the process)
NCAA follow up (continuation of above thread)

Coaches / recruitment
College athletics and your child
College athletes: recruiting questions
Question for athletic recruits: tell me about phone calls from coaches

Also, @Granny_Weatherwax (who started several of the above threads) has helped with recruiting of high school tennis players for playing on college teams, so she might have some general information for you about when/how to contact coaches.

And a side thought: because swimming is highly competitive at the college level, you might consider having your DS apply as "big fish in a little pond" -- so apply to Division III schools that have swim teams, so he can still swim in college, but does not have to jump all of the NCAA hoops required when swimming for a Division I or II college.

There are no sports scholarships awarded for Division III, BUT some schools encourage their athletes with *other* scholarships... 😉 And, if the Division III school is one that is a great fit academically and degree program-wise for the student, that makes Division III all the more attractive. 😉

Hi! Both of the other posters mentioned above did have kids who ended up swimming in college as well. I think MysteryJen’s kids did D1 which is a different experience. Lisa’s kids looked into swimming, not sure if either ended up actually swimming in college.

My son knew he wasn’t going to try and do D1, we discussed it before high school. I knew the NCAA requirements were stricter and I didn’t want to plan our high school around them if we didn’t have to. He was more interested in a small school anyway and he didn’t really want the pressure of D1 so that made the decision easy. We also knew that a lot of people get to school and then decide to quit their sport. So we advised him (as did his two coaches here) to pick a school for the school and secondarily for the swimming. It helped focus the college process...he only looked at D3 schools with swimming which was a good way to start to narrow down the field. He got significant amount of merit aid everywhere but no money for swimming.

He started contacting coaches in junior year just to get information about them and to put himself on their radar. Most schools have a recruiting form you can fill out on their website and he started with those. He then emailed the coaches of the places he was more interested in. He put something in the subject line like “High school junior sprint butterfly specialist interested in ____”. He would include in the first email his best times for his best events. They definitely will want to know what strokes they swim and their times in those strokes.

You can go to collegeswimming.com and find all the times for the schools you might be interested in. We were advised that you ideally want your times to be in the range to score points at their conference meet. So we would look at the school, then look at the times for his events (he’s a spring butterflyer primarily) and then look at the conference times. You can still contact places out of the range but it gives you an idea how realistic it is. He found for the most part that the coaches were honest. For example, he had one who said he could have a spot on the team but he wouldn’t be on their travel team and it would be a different experience than if he was at a school where he was contributing to the meets. That was helpful to hear up front.

Once he had heard from the coaches he just kept kind of keeping them up to date. For example he would write emails after a big meet and let them know how he did. We had some visits set up in the spring of 2020 and several were the kind of things where you go and spend the weekend with the team, but then Covid canceled them. Because of that our experience was probably a bit delayed than other years. Several coaches wanted him to make a commitment by the fall but he hadn’t visited everywhere and didn’t feel comfortable doing that. We did find that applying as an athlete gave him an advantage this year. Several places that were closed to tours were able to get him in to visit by having him meet privately with the coach. That was nice in a weird admissions year.

A slightly weird thing for him is he is taking a gap year. We weren’t sure how coaches would feel about it but he was very upfront about it with all of them and they all said it was fine as long as he didn’t take a year off of swimming. That was also something we werent’ sure about when applying. I would guess D1 coaches would not have been ok with i.  So he’s committed to a college now but won’t be starting until Fall 2022. The coaches have been great and have sent him workouts to do on his own and have hooked him into things like the team chat so he can kind of meet people.

You can DM me if you want..but we are also in Northern Virginia. It’s not unlikely that we know each other or have mutual acquaintances somehow. My son swims year round and we swim in the NVSL in the summer. One thing I would say is that because swimming is so competitive here I think we have a skewed view of things. My son is fast but not one of the top swimmers in the area by any stretch. He also isn’t at the national level and never has been. Many of his friends do go to the national meets in Florida and are at that level. So early on in high school I thought swimming in college was probably not realistic for him. But what we found when we started looking is that there were a LOT of schools where he was a very good fit academically and swim-wise.

Two other quick thoughts...D1 is a whole other ballgame and I can’t really give advice on that. Another is that we did get info on one of the recruiting websites where you put your information and then coaches can supposedly access it. The info came through PVS when we were signing up for club swimming so you might also see it. They market themselves as being essential. We started the free process and put his stats on there and he did get emails from coaches, but none were schools he was interested in. It may have been more useful if we paid the premium amount but I asked several friends who had gone through the process and had kids who were swimming in college and they all said it was unnecessary (some had used the sites for one kid and then weren’t for another, some just didn’t use it). So we ended up not paying for it and I think in the end we didn’t need it.

Good luck and feel free to DM me if you want.

My house feels like it got big and empty and quiet very quickly. Five years ago I had four kiddos living at home and now I'm down to one. Just seems like it happened so fast one after another. The one left at home is just starting 8th grade so I have some more time until college admissions again and I am grateful for that.

Best wishes to all the 2021 grads and parents as the time is finally here!

DD just got her official National Merit Finalist certificate in the mail today!  So proud of her!!!!

Update 3/12

Decision made, DD will be attending University of Alabama On the National Merit Scholarship!

I want to say a big Thank You to all the great moms on here who post so much about how this process works.  I never dreamed she would be in this position,  with multiple great offers!  When I started homeschooling my biggest fear was getting her into college- and here we are!  The ladies on this board are amazing mentors, and I appreciate the time you take to post here and guide us!

Busymom5 - I know this is an old post but I’d love to hear about how your dd likes U of A Tuscaloosa.  And what you can tell me about her experience and such.  Our sons’ college counselor was telling us about their NM package today, and we will be planning a trip to visit.  The money and perks sound awesome!
