TeachMomTeach Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 So, I'm looking through AAS and LoE (foundations). I'm specifically looking for a program that will teach the rules that go along with phonics and spelling, such as: use -es for plural when words end in , ch, sh, s, x, or z. c says /s/ when it's before e, i, or y When I looked at AAS, the lesson said that you add "es" to pluralize when you hear two syllables if you say the word. While it's not wrong, if you don't actually know that plural of a word you won't know if it has 2 syllables. So... did I miss something in AAS or is there another program that would be better? What is LoE like? Quote

If your dc cannot give the plural (churches, etc.) when given the singular (church), you have bigger issues than spelling. AAS is a fine program and a user friendly version of OG content. If you need something more intensive, look at Barton. 1 Quote

What is LoE like? I haven't looked at AAS, but if it teaches by giving so much misinformation regarding adding -es, then I have to doubt its efficacy altogether. I do Spalding. Like most other methods, it teaches that if a word ends with the sounds /ch/ /sh/ /s/ /z/ you add -es. Also, yes, it teaches two sounds for "c" /k/ /s/, along with the rule "I before e except after c and when it says /A/ as in neighbor and weigh" Spalding does everything that LoE does, except you just buy one book, the Writing Road to Reading, and a set of phonogram cards. Also, it doesn't do all the things at one time; IOW, you aren't going to teach grammar and everything all at once. I suppose you could, but IMHO that is unwieldy. You're reading to go for all your dc forever for less than $50. Quote
