mom2scouts Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 My teen insisted on studying a foreign language for which I have no experience. He chose German and I can't help with that at all because I only studied Spanish in high school and college. He has an adult sibling who speaks German, but they don't see each other often and that child attended a public school German class. Anyway, I bought him a grammar book, got Fluent Forever from the library, showed him a few other resources and let him study the language on his own for the the past three years. Yesterday he took a college placement test for foreign language and *easily* tested into the Intermediate 2 level and was told to consider the CLEP test for college credit. After 3 years in public school Spanish, with an A and a native speaking teacher, I only tested into intermediate 1 level. 9 Quote
8filltheheart Posted July 29, 2020 Posted July 29, 2020 Yes! I have had kids reach high levels of fluency through atypical foreign language studies and no teacher. It can be done. 3 Quote
