NewIma Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 School was supposed to start August 19th in our district. Last week they moved it back to August 31st. Have your school districts changed their start dates? Is that affecting when you will start back? August is coming way too fast. Quote
NewIma Posted July 25, 2020 Author Posted July 25, 2020 We are also consider have our kids visit their grandparents from August 28th to September 5 which is throwing a wrench in planning. Usually I would start mid August, but I don't know if it is worth it if we have a break so soon. Either way I need to get my butt in gear. LOL I have almost all my books, but I need to sit down, and explore them, and start figuring out what each day will look like. Quote
wendyroo Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 We school year round, so we never really stopped. But we did start several new subjects/resources about 3 weeks ago. Public schools around here are scheduled to start on Aug 24...but that never has any bearing on our plans. 1 Quote
freesia Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 August 24. We were going to start the next week, but cancelled our beach trip, and the online classes start that week. Our area usually starts in September, so we are a bit early for our area. 1 Quote
Clemsondana Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 We usually start the first week of Aubust, so we'll start on the 3rd. Public schools pushed out their start date until Aug. 17. 1 Quote
knitgrl Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 Schools here usually start the Wed. after Labor Day. Who knows what they will be doing this year. They all seem to be twiddling their thumbs waiting for what the state will say. For us, we only ever take off the month of July, so we will be starting up Aug. 3. I think I have everything pulled together for a smooth first week.... 1 Quote
8filltheheart Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 We have always deliberately started before ps starts so that when schools are in, we would plan trips to places when they were less crowded. TYpically we have started the first week of Aug. This yr we started the end of June/first full week of July with 3 day weeks. So we will have finished 15 days of our school yr before Aug. Those 15 days allowed me to create a school yr calendar where we have 3 extra full weeks off during the yr. 2 Quote
73349 Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 We don't follow the PS. Our fall term starts August 31. I think they're starting (online) 8/17 this year, except a few schools on special calendars start (online) 8/3. We're currently doing our light summer work, which takes about 2 hours a day, so our legal school year started July 6. 1 Quote
Miss Tick Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 We're starting the first week of August as planned, a week ahead of the local schools (currently). We have a few breaks scheduled that they don't. But mostly I don't like to wait because I don't like feeling like we *have* to keep doing school when we get to summer break time. We did some summer school year this year since all the extracurriculars were cancelled, so I am watching for burn out. So far things are looking good. 1 Quote

I'm thinking August 3rd. We always take the first day of PS off and it's difficult to do if we haven't started. 1 Quote
hollyhock2 Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 I want to start back Aug. 31. I think our local schools are only starting after Labor Day, so that's like Sept. 8 or something, but I didn't want to wait that long. 1 Quote
ikslo Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 Aug. 3 - I want to get a few weeks in before his online class starts so I can get an idea of flow and how he’ll handle the workload 1 Quote

purpleowl Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 Local schools were initially supposed to start August 10 but pushed it back to August 19. As of yesterday they were talking about pushing it back again, to August 24 (they're implementing new technology that they want teachers to have enough time to train on). We go year-round - took a two-week break at the end of June / beginning of July, but have been back at it for two weeks at this point. But I always do "first day of school" pics in mid-August. August 10ish is probably when that will happen for us still. 1 Quote
Guest Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 We start fading stuff in the week of August 10. We'll be fully back by Labor Day. We never really took a break yet this year-I started teaching my summer students as soon as we finished Spring because the kids had nothing else to do, and DD didn't really have a break, either, because she started online classes. And we just don't feel safe traveling, nor does it seem like a trip would be fun now. I'm hoping we're able to take a break down the road, when it's safer, and actually do something fun. 1 Quote
MeaganS Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 I don't know when the local schools start back. It really doesn't affect me. We school year round and haven't stopped, although we did have our official "first day of school" on Monday and the kids were promoted (6th, 4th, 3rd, and prek). 1 Quote
SounderChick Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 School doesnt start here until August 27th no word on any delays. We usually slowly start back mid August because all our summer activities are over. Than we have wiggle room during the year to get things done. This year I don't know. I wish I had gotten our curriculum ordered sooner so it would be here. It was here we would probably start now. In hopes of being able to travel or do activities more when they do open. 1 Quote
Mbelle Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 I'm going with my older kids college schedule. They start back on Aug 17 and move in 3 or 4 days before, so that gives me a few days to organize and prepare. 2 Quote
Noreen Claire Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 I haven't really thought about it yet. DH is a public high school teacher, so we are still waiting to see what his school schedule will look like for the fall. His college course is already slated to be taught on-line this fall, so that's one less thing to worry about. The college courses I will be teaching will start on Sept 9th, but I have yet to be told whether they will be in-person, hybrid, or fully online. I'm prepping for online (which I am dreading - I hate video conferencing!). It would probably be in my own best interest to start our homeschool a week or two before that, so everyone is settling in to a routine already. I also have to line up childcare for at least one afternoon (hybrid or online course) and possibly two days (if I have to hold classes in-person), so I should probably get on that. Eek. 1 Quote
NewIma Posted July 26, 2020 Author Posted July 26, 2020 It is interesting to see how many people school year round! The majority also seem to start based on what is best for your family, and free from school calendars! :) So would you start school for two weeks if you knew you were going to take the 3rd week off? Probably not. Or if I did start for two weeks, they wouldn't be full pace - they would be "dip the toe in" a couple subjects for 3 or 4 days of the week. (Also depends on age.) 2 Quote

We usually start more mid August, but we're taking the week before that off to go camping, so it seemed silly to start and then take a week off right away. Usually the local ps starts mid August too but this year it's Aug 6 🤤 We do not school year round because my kids would revolt 😆 And because the teens all have summer ag related jobs and whatnot. And because I like a break too 😁 This year I would have been emotionally ready to start earlier because it feels like we've been on break since March. I mean, we did school during quarantine, but we didn't do anything else and so we had tons of free time and it feels like summer has been going on forever. But starting earlier didn't work well with the camping trip which was planned around oldest DS's internship, so here we are. 3 Quote

I might and have actually done a week and then taken a week off. This is mostly bc we do about 6 weeks on, one off and have for ten years. It’s the best rhythm for our family so if I need to start and stop ( bc of the timing of a beach trip for instance) I do rather than give that schedule up. 1 Quote

We are not yr round homeschoolers. I need the break every bit as much as my kids. I normally revel in our long summer vacations. I tried yr round schooling 1 yr and I crashed and burned. I need rejuvenating. Starting the beginning of July was simply bc of covid. Yes. I start whenever is convenient for our current situation. 2 weeks would be a good amt of time for easing into all subjects, establishing a routing, and recognizing what might need to be tweaked. When you start back, go with the clearer vision. Edited July 26, 2020 by 8FillTheHeart 1 1 Quote

Usually we travel during the summer but when we are home, kids most definitely do school work, but it’s extra stuff, things we don’t usually get to during the school year. Not regular subjects. This year has been depressing. My older kid has been loving AoPS Python class and reading, but we don’t really call that school. 1 Quote
Arcadia Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 My school district kept their usual start date of August 15th, just would be online for Fall semester which ends at Christmas. DS15 is doing summer term at community college as we typically school year round. We usually go on vacation when my husband has business trips. We just bring school work along since he drives for business trips. He won’t need to travel for business this year as his employer has suspended all business travel until next year. We do hope to take a vacation in-state during winter to play snow if the pandemic gets under control. 1 Quote

This year our first two weeks were alternately great and frustrating and probably having a week off to retweek things would have been perfect. We do a 6 week on, 1 week off schedule with a short summer break. It is helpful to me to have multiple breaks during the year rather than one long break. I had planned to start Aug 3, but my boys were being way too wrestle-y ALL THE TIME (mixed in with a bunch of crying because they got hurt), so we started July 6. So far so good (now that we're done with week 3 😉). My husband's a ps teacher, but it's nice for him when the kids have something to do and he can get house projects done. We have taken a few days off for family hiking trips. Homeschooling flexibility is wonderful! 1 Quote
Violet Crown Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 We don't school year-round, but take a longer break in Nov-Dec when it's fit for human beings to go outside, and work hard over summer when it isn't. That said, there's one last "camp" (on-line) first week of August, then starting a more formal than usual academic year second week of August with child plus friend of child. Got to go organize.... 1 Quote
