I'm working on planning writing for ds15 who will likely be homeschooled next year. He does not like to write, but he isn't terrible from what I can tell.

I'd like to be thoughtful about writing and provide structure for him. I'd like to work on essays and research papers and avoid (most) literary analysis. I hated literary analysis in high school and it really turned me off of the humanities.

Ideally, he'll write proofs, he'll write two science research papers (likely a write up for a math fair project and for some bird research he's doing, each about 8-10 pages), he'll do some history writing, and maybe some current event based essays. I remember writing a long-term research paper in my sophomore year of high school, so I'd like him to do something like that, too.

I'm looking for a guide that might provide me with some ideas on how to structure expectations as well as how to teach him to scaffold larger writing assignments.

Thanks for the help.

I highly recommend listening to SWB talk "A Plan for Teaching Writing: Focus On the High School Years" which can be found here: https://welltrainedmind.com/p/a-plan-for-teaching-writing-focus-on-the-high-school-years-mp3/?v=7516fd43adaa     This is an audio and instant download so you can listen to it right away. I took notes as I listened. Also, there are three writing resources that she recommends either in her talk or in TWTM. They are:

1) The Elements of  Style     https://www.amazon.com/Elements-Style-Fourth-William-Strunk/dp/020530902X/ref=sr_1_3?crid=15ANGE59YNV1W&dchild=1&keywords=the+elements+of+style&qid=1595452156&sprefix=The+Elemen%2Caps%2C378&sr=8-3

2) A new workbook just came out that goes with The Elements of Style which can be found here: https://www.amazon.com/Elements-Style-Workbook-Strategies-Featuring/dp/1642810053/ref=sr_1_6?crid=15ANGE59YNV1W&dchild=1&keywords=the+elements+of+style&qid=1595452232&sprefix=The+Elemen%2Caps%2C378&sr=8-6

3) Schaum's Quick Guide to Writing Great Research Papers     https://www.amazon.com/Laurie-Rozakis/dp/0070123004/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=writing+great+research+papers&psr=EY17&qid=1595452268&s=todays-deals&sr=1-5-catcorr

4) They Say, I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic  Writing     https://www.amazon.com/They-Say-Matter-Academic-Writing/dp/0393631672/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3E7V30O271C65&dchild=1&keywords=they+say+i+say+the+moves+that+matter+in+academic+writing+4th+edition&qid=1595452331&s=books&sprefix=They+Say+I+sa%2Cstripbooks%2C190&sr=1-1

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Lily. I think I listened to that talk a few years ago. I'll find it and listen to it again.
