Carrie12345 Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 Is there a specific area of psychology/therapy that would be considered the most skilled for dealing with narcissistic and narc-type/ narc-impacted relationships? I definitely need an outlet to vent and help me manage unavoidable interaction. Between a general lack of understanding and confidentiality issues, a therapist is the only real option that I can think of. But it’s also really expensive, so I don’t want to spend a bunch of money to rule out people who aren’t highly skilled in that dynamic. Quote
Katy Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 I don't know that there is one type that specializes in those who have to deal with narcissists. But the most effective and shortest form of therapy is typically cognitive behavioral therapy. This type of therapy teaches you to identify the lies you tell yourself, or even the lies a narcissist tells you that you might agree with. You typically have some homework and it's a matter of weeks or months rather than years in therapy. Even the therapists I know typically prefer this type of therapy if they've experienced it. Others, who have ongoing stressful jobs and need a private place to talk it out like more traditional talk therapy. 1 Quote
