Under the heading of "Today's Random Cr@p" - a housefly can fly at speeds around 5mph.  They live between 2-4 weeks.  They can indeed travel 1-2 miles.

So, yes, it is completely possible, if  you live close to a hog farm, for you to have an INSANE number of flies in your house if your children enter/exit your home 356 times a day.
Also, the electric rackets can stun your flies but they will, less miraculously, then get back up.  The super heavy duty swatters? Not worth it - they have a stress point and break just as easily.

Death.  Death to the flies.

Fly ribbon. That’s all I got. And I hate it in summer when my dh brings the cows up by the house to graze. Blech.

This is an area of contention. I hate them. Inevitably someone touches them too.  So, fly ribbons in the garage (first door between the great outdoors and my kitchen) in the mud room (2nd door) and one in the laundry room (third door.)

So, really, I need the kids to NOT use the front door or the back door! In my mind? Solves all the problems. DH is power spraying the garage today to eliminate all possible attractions like leftover sticky popsicle residue.

OH I hate them too. I tend to hang them from a light fixture over the kitchen sink. And if you leave the light on all night, that tends to draw the flies. But yes they are NASTY and goey and gummy. Vile things.

Have you ever heard of a Bug-a-salt???   We found them a few years ago and have to admit have a little too much fun using them.

So the theory goes that you can pelt the little buggers with salt? Because this might be my nightmare scenario - flies (not dead, just momentarily knocked out then ready to go for round #2) plus salt plus gun times nine kids and friends.........................  LOL!

My son!s house has one. The two older kids use it, 6 and 8. Yes, the flies die.

One of my adult dc used to take on every fly and got really good at just knocking them out of the air to the floor. They almost always died with one hit.  It inspired me, as I had never tried to hit a fly unless it had landed somewhere, and I often missed as they took off.  It took some practice, but now I can hit them out of the air, too.  Now my youngest is trying to learn the skill.

The salt guns sound like a fun way to deal with a frustrating problem.  If you are concerned about the salt guns and eyes, you could require everyone to don their swim goggles before the guns are used.

A friend lives on property that has mosquitoes year-round.  Due to marshy creek land, there's really no way to solve the problem.  And there's West Nile around here, so it's an issue.  They installed a type of fan that turns on automatically when the front door opens.  Not sure of a brand, cost, etc.  It kind of blends in with the wall, so it's not too intrusive; it's a rectangular-looking thing, kind of like a small AC unit.  It blasts air on the doorway whenever the door opens, so mosquitoes aren't able to fly in.  Not sure if that would fit your needs, price range, etc., but, if you live near a hog farm and have constant fly pressure, it's a thought.

You do have to make sure the kiddos don't shoot each other in the eyes, but otherwise, it uses so little salt each shot, it doesn't end up everywhere.   I'm telling you, they are the best thing!   And yes, we may have more then one or two

@PeterPan  We give a few out each year!

Oh man, I’m right there with you. We live about half a mile from a dairy. And they only get worse as we get into August. DH locked the deadbolt on the front door and put a piece of masking tape over it to forcibly remind the kids not to use that door.

Can you get a cat? Our loves to chase and eat flies. 🙂

I have six cats in my house, and not a one of them is willing to chase flies. Or any other bug, at least not when it's useful to me. They enjoy swatting cicadas outside, but that is not useful. Chasing lizards, also not useful.

One or two of them will chase and swat mice at our cabin in the woods, which is useful, but not as useful as if they'd actually kill them.
