His oldest son is expecting a baby next month.  His in laws (they currently live with them) threw them a baby shower yesterday.  Our numbers here in OK are spiking so Dh made the decision we could not go. He called dss23 and explained the reason and got  a little push back, but not much.  Today we drove over an hour each way to deliver our gift to them.  Dss23 came to the door very pleasant, took the gift and asked us if we wanted to visit a bit on the big open deck.  So we did.  His wife came out and then immediately her father too.  Smoking.  Sitting next to his pregnant daughter.  In the course of the half hour that we were there he said the following....

1) TX is only a hot spot because the media says it is. LA is high too but they don’t talk about that (but also it is all overblown)

2) numbers are so high because the immunity test, which is the most widely used test, also picks up the common flu ( yes he said flu).   ( this one I actually corrected him on, but he barely stopped talking)

3) my friend who is a doctor ( doubtful) and his wife is a nurse.....at the end of a shift she sent in 8 empty tests and the next day they all came back positive.

4)my friend who is a doctor (I think a different doctor/doubtful friend) told me I could go to the bad side of Tulsa and get myself shot dead in the street and they would record my death as Covid because

5) every public hospital—NOT private, only public, gets $37k for every Covid death

There was so much more.....including how Jesus is a combination of Zeus and something else that makes up the word Jesus.....so—Pagan.

I have never experienced anything like it.  No one in my world is anywhere near this level of conspiracy theory.

I'm surprised he didn't mention 5G towers and the 19 year old who got pleurisy from wearing a mask — I think those are the only boxes he didn't tick on Nutjob Consirpacy List. 🤦‍♀️

What exactly was he smoking?!

the latest conspiracy doing the rounds is something to do with the Covid test crossing the blood brain barrier or something.

is this the stepson whose marriage you were worried about?

Oh I forgot

6) Masks don’t work. He has a friend who works in a job where he has to wear a hazmat suit for job and if masks worked they would be wearing masks instead of full suit.
7) CDC changes its mind everywhere day.

That didn’t even touch on the other stupid stuff he was saying.  I kept trying to talk to the kids....dss23 is about to have surgery, and his wide is 32 weeks pregnant.....he kept answering for dss and I kept re directing to dss.  Dss23 needs back surgery....he is on dh’s insurance which is 3k deductible and then pays 100%.  The FIL says, ‘ It won’t be a problem at all for me to pay the 3k deductible and I already consulted an attorney because this is a work related injury and someone is going to pay’.   Oh and he was an expert’ on back surgeries. Dh who has had 3 back surgeries and actually  does know a lot about it just let him talk.

DS told us a few weeks back that the surgeon wants him to quit smoking for 30days before surgery. FIL says, ‘ oh he told me that too but I didn’t’ .  Then proceeded to tell me how his mother smoked 2 packs a day for 70 years and lived to be 95 and the doctor said she would have lived to be over 100 if she had not smoked and she said oh I have outlived everyone I wanted to anyway’.   At this point DIL interrupts  to say ‘yes but dss23 wants to stop smoking anyway.’  Her dad says , ‘yes it’s tough. I quit buying any and was going to quit but I just went in and took some of my wife’s, and she didn’t like that much’.  DIL, light heartedly says, ‘she didn’t like that all.’  He says, a little aggressively, ‘I don’t give a damn, I pay for everything so if I want to use them I will!’

And on and on and on.

Oh, that was another thing, one of his doctor friends he agrees with on everything except the doctor thinks marijuana should be legalized and he (FIL) believes marijuana and all opioids should be outlawed. (oh how I wanted to say 'how about nicotine?')

Thanks for the heads up. I'm pretty sure that will come up sooner than later, though perhaps I have unfriended or unfollowed enough crazy to not see that one. I think some of the crazies locally follow QAnon or are influenced by people who do whether they know it or not.

The nice thing about people who go crazy with conspiracy theories is that they really aren't interested in hearing what you have to say/don't give you an opportunity to say anything.  So you don't really have to worry about how you should respond.
