I have my kids read through that series during middle school.  Oldest just finished it (rising 8th grade) and second just began it (rising 6th grade).  I have them read 2 chapters a week, and watch two youtube videos on topics from those chapters that they find interesting.  I count it as a cross between history and science, but would not have it stand a lone as science- we do other stuff as well in middle school, like Ellen McHenry's stuff.

Oldest did BYL 8, which uses the book series. She enjoyed that program, but it's not a good fit for the next two kids.

This year, I am having my youngest do what Monica in Switzerland is doing with the books - reading through them and watching a video or doing a demonstration on the topic (we have a slew of experiment books here to choose something from). She will assist in middle child's chemistry labs to round it out.
