Time In a Bottle

Almost any song by Bread

The Dance by Garth Brooks

Oh gosh, Bread! There is a flash of the past.

If I can think of more, I will add them:

Fields of Athenry - I like the version by the Irish Tenors

A lot of songs by Peter Maffay

Torna a Surriento - Many performers, Mario Lanza, Il Volo, etc.

O mio babbino caro - Maria Callas, also Montserrat Caballe

Good night Saigon - Billy Joel

In the same vein as Violet Crown’s choices, one of the most moving, saddest pieces I know is Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Versa est in luctum... from his Requiem.

My harp is turned to mourning, and my organ into the voice of those
that weep. Spare me, Lord, for my days are nothing.”

Few could plumb the depths of suffering like Spanish Renaissance composers.

Billy Don’t Be A Hero (Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods)

This reminds me of "Billy and Sue" by B J Thomas

"New York's Not My Home" by Jim Croce  "It's been so long since I have felt fine..."

"Cherokee Louise" by Joni Mitchell (warning child sexual abuse, beautiful song though)

This one isn't necessarily a sad song because it has no words...  It's a classical piece.  But whenever I hear it, I think it's one of the most beautifully sad songs I've ever heard.

Mirror in Mirror (aka Spiegel im Spiegel)

If you want to go international, practically everything this group does is sad (or angry or political or all three.) I’d love to choreograph a dance to one of their songs because I LOVE their sound, but they’re just TOO moody for what my students usually do.  It’s a Lebanese group called Mashrou’ Leila  Their fans are Leilaholics. 😂 I’ll spare you the haunting translation, but it’s about betrayal.

“Into Dust” Mazzy Star

”Sleepless Nights” Norah Jones

“Mary Skeffington” Gerry Rafferty. He wrote it for his mother who was often beaten by her alcoholic husband.

”Sylvia’s Mother” Dr. Hook. Shel Silverstein wrote quite a few of their songs’ lyrics. This was one.

”Beggin’” Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons

”The Living Years” Mike and the Mechanics

”Cavatina”

”Tango to Evora” Loreena McKennitt

“Slow Dancing in the Dark” Joji

”Where Did You Sleep Last Night/In the Pines” Leadbelly. I like Janel Drewis’s version.

”Hawaii ‘78” Israel Kamakawiwo’ole

Some of the songs from Les Mis: Fantine’s Death, The ABC Cafe, On My Own, Bring Him Home, Empty Chairs at Empty Tables

Some of Nick Drake’s songs

“Drew” “Laurel” “Stranger” Goldfrapp

“Beethoven’s Silence” Ernesto Cortazar

“Tausend Tranen Tief” Blumfeld but Scala & Kolacny Brothers’ version is sadder.

"When David Heard" by Eric Whitacre.

This piece is very very long, so it may not make your playlist, but it should be really listened to at least once by anyone who wants their heart broken. You can't rush the listening though.

[Spoiler: To help, it starts off with,  "When David Heard that Absolom was slain, he went up into his chamber up over the gate and wept." The rest you should be fine with, but sometimes the beginning is hard to hear.]

So much awesome saddness here! Thank you thank you! It will take me a chunk of time, but I am going to listen to every single song posted here.

There are a lot of unknown-to-me songs here, which is not surprising given our range of ages and musical tastes. I've been on a mission to expand myself musically, so that's a plus. I'm in my 50s so I probably know all of the older songs, but had forgotten about many of them. I feel like I missed all the good music, movies, and TV of the 90s -  the only exception being stuff that toddlers and preschoolers liked. Once I had teenagers in the house, I started to at least hear what they were listening to.

Now I've asked my family for their choices.

@happysmileylady Based on your user name, I am not surprised that you don't generally like sad songs 🙂
