American history for self- education

Recommended Posts

I'd like to read a general history of the United States. Any recommendations? I have looked around a bit and it seems like the Paul Johnson book might be what I am looking for, but I'd like to know if there are others you or your high schoolers have enjoyed. I haven't done a lot of history reading since school textbooks. If I read history, it is social history or biographies. My goal for this is to find something that is a bit more big picture, to force me to read and think about areas of history that I am not naturally interested in.

An alternative to reading would be to listen to Great Courses lectures. I find they are really good at drawing out "big picture" themes. More expensive than a book, but with the audio you could listen while doing other things.

Thanks for the tip! I tend to forget audio, but I could be using my walking time so much more efficiently! 🙂
