We are not early adopters of new technology and tend to use our things until they are completely worn out or otherwise unusable. Our ancient TV (circa 2003) recently died and we've finally replaced it with a used, but much newer, flat screen TV. We also had an old combination DVD/VCR player that recently died. In preparation for the newer TV and stand, we took all the media out and started to go through it.  I know that we should just throw out the VCR tapes, but DD is upset that she can't watch some of her favorite movies anymore. We have some old family movies that are in the form of VCR tapes too.

What kind of format should we use to transfer the family video? Should they go into some certain kind of digital format or should we just have them made into DVD? Is DVD going to disappear soon or is that a format likely to hang around for awhile? Is it worth buying some of the movies DD enjoys in DVD form? We don't have subscription services and I not sure that would offer all the movies we want whenever we want them anyway and Dh probably wouldn't be excited to pay for any subscriptions since he doesn't watch TV. I'd prefer not to have the family movies in a downloadable only format because computers hate me and I've lost important things to hard drive crashes before, so I'm looking for a physical format.
