“He dared to think.” Who was this?

We read several years ago about a man (colonial period I think) who was executed and, “He dared to think” was written on his grave. Can anyone name the person and the circumstances of his death?  
Google isn’t being helpful. I thought if anyone would know, it would be the Hive. Thanks.
