theelfqueen Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 So I had a scooter accident and went face first into the pavement (I had helmet, no concussion) I cut up my hands and knee quite a bit. I have four stitches above my eye and pretty extensive bruising on my chin and around my eye. As a matter of course, I do not wear makeup. I know how to apply makeup but it has been many years since I've worn makeup. I cannot wear mascara or eyeliner so it would just be concealer. So this is gonna look a mess for quite a while. I dont think makeup really does a good job of covering bruising (generally it looks like you're trying to cover a bruise not like a bruise is covered) . And people are judgy about women with bruises on their faces. I am thinking it is better not to attempt to cover and just to let it be what it is ... thankfully a mask mostly covers my chin so mostly anyone close enough to actually see it, mostly won't.... So, thoughts? Quote
regentrude Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 (edited) Just leave them be. People won't usually SAY anything. I had an accident and a split lip and looked exactly as if somebody had hit me, but not a single soul remarked upon it or asked whether I'm ok or what happened. It was really eye opening. Concealing bruises make people think worse case scenario of DV or assault. An ex-classmate’s mom did cover her bruises due to DV with heavy makeup when I was in elementary school. Quote
Tap Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 I see people with facial bruises all the time. I never assume DV. Most of the time it is a fall or car accident. I agree that hiding it makes it look more suspicious. Try Arnica to help the bruises heal fast. There are oral tablets that you can find at a health food store, or gel. If you are not prone to sensitive skin, the gel will probably be more beneficial, but it depends on your skin tolerance. You will find Arnica gel at a health food store, in a natural supplement section at a grocery store, or in muscle rub section of most pharmacies. If you live rural, try Amazon. Quote
gardenmom5 Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 wear a mask, wear a smile and confident bearing, you can't win for trying. when I had dudeling, my arm was heavily bruised. the mom-nurse started freaking out thinking I was being abused. actually, all of it was caused by an inept (and insufferable) labor nurse. theelfqueen Posted June 16, 2020 Author Posted June 16, 2020 Ok you're all making me feel more confident about not trying to cover anything. Quote
Tanaqui Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 If this is a one-off incident most people will forget all about it once the bruises fade anyway. Quote
KrissiK Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 I would leave it. Years ago I had to have an injection in my eyeball and it caused bruising around my eye and it drifted all the way down my face. It was terrible. I looked terrible. But nobody commented and I was pretty open about it and it went away, and it was kind of fun To see people’s reaction when I told them how I got the bruising.🤣 Quote

So, thoughts? Not regarding the bruises but the fall- beware if you get any floaters or spots in your eyes. Or make a preventative Opthamologist appt. I had a similar fall and developed floaters which I ignored for longer than I should have. Turns out falls like that can tear a retina. I did get to the doctors before it detached, but the holes they had to laser up were bigger than if I had it checked out sooner. 1 Quote
KungFuPanda Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 I think “I was trying to be a cool mom and ride a scooter” explains everything. 2 Quote
J-rap Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 Well, I think it's up to you! If you're okay with some people wondering, then who cares! If you're self-conscious about it, there's a type of makeup you can get that's not regular concealer makeup, it's different than that. My mother used it after a facial surgery. I think her doctor recommended it. You have to get it at a speciality shop of some sort. Sorry, I can't remember exactly what it was or where she got it! But it really worked. Quote
TravelingChris Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 I get bruises a lot because I am on blood thinners and then I also fall alot. If anyone looks strangely at me, I just explaIn that I am on blood thinners and fell, bumped something (this happens all the time and causes bruises on my arms, had a blood draw, or whatever the cause or presumed by me cause is. { Since really minor incidents can cause large bruises, I don't always know the exact cause but in almost ten years of being on blood thinners, I have learned a lot of the patterns of the causes,) And I just use Arnica to help them go away faster. kiwik Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 I have had some odd looks with some of my bruises. It is good that people notice though. In my case I am just clumsy and bruise easily. Just smile and say you won't ride a scooter again. Quote
KungFuPanda Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 I always have bruises on the back of my arms. It looks like someone grabbed my arm up by my shoulder. The trouble is, I can't SEE this at all. I teach dance classes with a whole room of women behind me. They did finally ask because they've known me and my husband for years and the bruise pattern was new when and consistent. I didn't even know about it and it was a mystery. The culprit was my son's patient lift! The hydraulics on his old one was dying so we swapped it out. The new one has different handles and I tend to bump the back of each arm on each handle a couple times a day. I'm glad I'm not haunted or something. A scooter wreck is a way better story and bumping a handle every day. If someone DOES ask, I would encourage them to KEEP asking when they see something suspicious. We once had a woman in class that came in with some horrible bruises. We did question her. She had gone on a high ropes course. Now that we've known her for years and have seen her in action, we know that she's both highly athletic AND clumsy. She's a real character. Quote
