Zebra Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 for a 16 year old, me and DH. I'm lost. It was easier when I could pick out kid lit. I am trying to pick out something interesting for all of us, but not too inappropriate or graphic. FWIW we have been watching "This is Us" as a family. We have been enjoying it, but it's at the edge of the type of content DH is comfortable with watching with DD. Any genre. Any suggestions? Quote
PrincessMommy Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 (edited) I just finished listening to "The Coroner's Lunch" and enjoyed it. It's set in 1970's Laos right after the war. It is a mystery. It gave me a little glimpse into another time and culture as well as having interesting characters. The Bartimaeus series is good. I especially liked the first one. True Grit. It is a little gritty but not sexual. It is really a great book. The Book Thief Far From the Madding Crowd Persuasian E=MC 2 (can't make the squared): The Biography of the Worlds most Famous Equation. Cry, Beloved County - great audio. There's two audio versions. I can't remember which one is the better narrator. One narrator isn't so great. Gilbert Cunningham series by McIntosh - it's a light mystery set in medieval England. Anything by Wodehouse - Wooster and Jeeves series. Can't wait to see what others suggest. I'm hitting a dry spell right now. Edited June 11, 2020 by PrincessMommy Quote
Ottakee Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Michelle Obama's Becoming was a great audio book I listened to with my daughter . Another one great for discussion and thinking is The Coddling of the American Mind. 1 Quote
Hen Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 I am listening to Harley Merlin series right now, it's pretty good, teen/young adult centered, about Magics. Clean, kind of Harry Potterish. Interesting characters, more than one point of view starting in book 2, I'm on book 3 right now. I am also enjoying Breakthrough - think Tom Clancy adventure but with more interesting personable characters that you grow to care for, a bit of romance, but clean, no scenes, dolphins!!! and a small bit of alien life. You get the Tom Clancy -special forces/ tough guy & intrigue, but also science, space mystery and some romance. It's clean, but there might be some cuss words. I think I'm on book 4 of that series. I think there is cussing, but not a lot, not enough that it bothered me. Artemis Fowl series of course! A middle school target audience I think, but my husband loved listening to these, the narrator is incredible!! The movie is about to come out, too. We listened to these on vacation trips as a family. My youngest daughter and I listened to the Raven boys series together and really enjoyed it. It's probably aimed at teens and a bit more edgy, I think the teens might cuss a lot-enough to not want to listen with young kids in the car, but it's clean romance-wise. It's got fantasy, magic, dark magic, dreams, mystery and characters you love, some old english mythology, Latin! 1 Quote
Kareni Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Assuming that profane language is acceptable, I'd suggest The Martian by Andy Weir. Regards, Kareni 1 Quote
Garga Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 I’m listening to Jurassic Park, free on youtube. 🙂 Even though I’ve seen the movie a bunch of times, it’s still fun to listen to it. 2 Quote
