A friend of mine posted this.  I would love to hear various viewpoints on what she has to say, especially from people of color.

I am open to positive and negative comments....but please be respectful of each other.

I have typed and re typed so many things but none are nice and shouldn’t be said here. I’ll just say I, for a long time now, have thought Candace Owens to be a rather awful person.

I honestly have no idea who Candace Owens is.....seriously.

Can you share you thoughts on WHAT she said, rather than who she is?  If not, that is fine.

It doesn’t matter who George Floyd was. What matters is that a cop murdered him. What matters is that it keeps happening and people keep making excuses. It’s sickening.

Candace Owens is VERY controversial, politically. I can’t get the video to play, but just wanted to let you know since it’ll probably have an impact on the responses. 😉

I do not agree with all that she says. But I very much appreciate your having posted it.

I think I would like to discuss it with my young adult son.

I think points about not idolizing criminals, not having a victim mentality and working hard to achieve are important.

Can someone please define a 'victim mentality'? Because if most of us had a victim mentality there wouldn't be any successful, upper middle class or wealthy minorities in America. You can comment on, critique, observe, protest and reject discrimination in all its forms without believing that every bad thing that happens to you is because you're a victim of 'the man' or the system. And for black kids raised in black families the  message that you have to work that much harder, be that much smarter, goes hand in hand with messages about discrimination. It's not an excuse...it's FUEL. Her entire argument is predicated on BS. No one is celebrating Floyd's run ins with the law or battles with substance abuse, whatever they may be. ALL people are flawed. Folks are objecting to the idea that those things invited or necessitated a DEATH SENTENCE. And, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, do not put that ridiculous sound bite slogan about 'victim card' in your son's head unless you want to deliberately create a giant rift between him and the vast majority of people in his ethnic community. This is why I have MAJOR, MAJOR issues with some transracial adoptions. Candace Owens is the equivalent of an ambulance chaser, a YouTube celebrity with no substance to back her up. She's a shill, a plant, and not at all representative of the community she claims. In the words of my father's generation...a paid Uncle Tom.

Maybe she could have said that without smearing a dead man who was murdered by people sworn to protect.

Actually, I think there’s a special circle of Hell for people like her. You can’t judge a book by its cover, but this lady’s story has been one of pure garbage for quite a while.

She is pandering to white people in need of confirmation. Turns out this is a very lucrative business.

Again, this poor man was murdered! FULL STOP and it should NOT have happened!

That's what wrong with this board and why so many just choose not to engage:  someone references a person who presents a vastly, unapologetically different point of view than what you deem right and you wish them to HELL and call her story garbage.

She is different--so different that NO ONE of any import within the group she claims to represent acknowledges her as a thought leader in any way, shape or form.

ETA: If you REALLY want to know what black people think, read the perspectives of those who HAVE been elevated by the greater ethnic community...Ta-Nehisi Coates, Eugene Robinson, Cornel West, Alicia Garza, DeRay Mckesson...and on it goes.

I think the issue is it’s not just one opinion about this one thing that is different. Her opinion differs (that seems way to tame a description for her) from every single POC that I listen to, admire, and respect. I can’t even judge her for this one opinion because all of her crazy rattles around in my head when I see/hear her.

Disclaimer: I did not watch the whole video. I looked for a transcript but could only find quotes.

First of all, I can't take seriously anyone who says "Racially motivated police brutality is a myth."

Also, as far as I know, no one is claiming that George Floyd was a hero. They are protesting his murder at the hands of the police. He *was* a victim, and any wrongs he committed in his life have zero to do with what happened to him.

Finally, the video seems mean-spirited to me. What is the point of speaking ill of Mr. Floyd now?

Candace Owens' entire schtick is that racism doesn't exist, black people's problems are entirely their own doing, and if black people would just stop committing crimes and threatening the police, then the police wouldn't have to kill them! Work harder, act whiter, and <poof> no racism!

Not surprisingly, white racists eat this stuff up and have made her rich and famous. Well, "famous" anyway. She's a stooge.

Racism doesn’t exist but she sued her college, and won a settlement, due to the racism she experienced?!? 🤯

How can we listen to so many black people's voices and perspectives and pleas, and give priority to the opinions of a very small minority who say something different? She has the right to say whatever she wants, and I realize that black people do not have some monolithic set of beliefs and perspectives, but if I hear 1000 people say one thing and 5 people say it's BS, I'm going to listen to the crowd. It's a crowd of voices saying the same thing for 100 years, all the data agrees that black people are disproportionately mistreated by police, every black person I personally know and trust is scared for their black sons, and to give her opinion more than 2 seconds thought in the face of the chorus of information against her seems really disrespectful to every other person who's been pleading for us to listen.

Passing around her video seems no better than the whole stupid "Plandemic" video.

And to say the things she said about George Floyd is entirely unnecessary and intentionally inflammatory and hurtful to his family.

Yes, I laughed at you, perhaps that wasn’t necessary, but really. Have you listened to her much, or read her online statements? It’s my opinion that there should be a special place for people like that. There’s nothing wrong with this board, except some people get their knickers twisted very easily.

Soneone puts up a video of an EXTREMELY controversial person, you get what you get.

Sure, laugh at me.

But you see, Dot, this isn't the first time you wished people to hell who disagreed with you.  It's hard to hear what you have to say when you fling such vitriol to people with whom you disagree.

Hearing harsh words may not be nice but we TRY at to hear them anyway. No one is own politesse. This woman is a con artist in the same vein as our national leader. There's zero substance or training or study behind her words. Lap it up at your peril, is all.
