dear heavens! You "keeping them busy" while I'm desperately trying to finish writing a novel is NOT helpful if it involves tickle fights in the next room. Loud ones. Or, as is currently going on, some game that involves a robotic pinchy crab. All I can hear over the kids' screams of laughter is my husband, in a robotic voice, saying, "Obstructions in pinchers one and two...pincher malfunction...obstruction in pincher one....pincher one resuming pinches.....target acquired.....naughty crab pinching simulator...rebooting....targeting...targeting...target acquired....resuming pinching......"

Trying to write the proposal scene during that chaos is...not happening.

Also, invariably I get them quiet and he walks in and says, "What's up!" and they all start making noise again. Or I get them settle and start reading schoolwork to them and he calls the dogs, gets them barking, slams cabinet doors, etc etc.

Dude....maybe you have noticed that when YOU are working, I keep the kids QUIET???

Well at least it's something.  Annoying, but at least he is doing something with them.  My dh's version of keeping them busy is telling the big ones to go outside and play and telling me the little ones don't like to play with him.  sigh.

Noise cancelling headphones combined with little foam earbuds.

Or, foam earbuds and "ear muffins," hearing protection headphone style, best decibel protection for cheapest price are hearing protection for hunting at Walmart.

Whoever keeps downvoting Katie's threads...not cool.

Any chance you can pack up the minivan and drive to a shady park to type? Or just run the ac?

Ds has noise canceling headphones. He picked up a replacement pair at costco for $200 last week. (His first ones broke when he bumped into a tree. Long story.)  He can't do any schoolwork without them, every bit of noise is too distracting.

I didn't know we could still do this. Did they take it away and then bring it back?

On my phone there are no ratings so I never think of them until someone says something. I think if it's on an iPad or something people have said it's easy to touch accidentally.

I just went to the desktop site and I can see it. If you ever need to you can check the desktop with the three dots at the top of your phone.

I would be willing to bet she was down voted for saying something about her husband. I called mine a twit once and I got a lot more than down voted.

This is true, very easily hit accidently while scrolling on an iPad.  So I don't even look at ratings.

I just expect loudness and we have teens generally unless there is a special announcement of noise level needed.  Now that we have 4 of us at home ALL the time we "schedule" the main area of our house if one needs it for a meeting or whatever.  I guess I don't think it's odd 3 young kids and a dad would be noisy unless you said you needed special quiet.  And I wouldn't expect them to maintain quiet for more than an hour.  I'd look for head phones or a new place to set up a laptop that might be further from the main area of our home.

I’ve heard that it’s easy to accidentally hit the button and you don’t always even know you’ve done it.

And...men are just LOUD.  They don’t even know it.

When I’m cooking, I quietly set the spoon down or place the pan on the burner.  Dh tosses the spoon (clatter) and bangs down the pan (crash.)

I was watching Casino Royale the other day (James Bond movie) and Daniel Craig was snooping around ”quietly”, but he was doing the same thing my dh does—tossing stuff on a table (clatter) and banging cupboards shut. By the end of the scene, I had to cross Daniel Craig off my “If I was single, what celebrity would I marry” list.  All that noise!  Men think they’re being quiet, but they just don’t get it.  😄

Yeah, he knew I was almost done with the book, and desperately trying to finish it. And it had been exactly 10 minutes since I sat down to try to do that, lol.

I think part of it is that when he's working, he doesn't realize the effort I go to in order to keep them quiet, so maybe he doesnt realize how the sound travels? Or..I don't know, lol.

Yes, pre-pandemic I used to go write in the parking lot at starbucks a lot. Sometimes I write outside on the patio, but it was raining

I did end up taking my laptop with me when I took the dog to the vet just after that, and got work done while waiting for the dog.

I second and third the noise cancelling headphones. My dd and dh both have them - they can be in the same room as us watching tv and still are able to work. Now we don’t have young kids so we don’t have the movement, but they definitely don’t hear anything.

my husband listens to the inception soundtrack on a loop or the YouTube channel that has 8 hours of music to study by. It would drive me batty though, it’s so weird and unmelodic that I would spend my time trying to make a melody where there is none.

I’m envisaging a proposal scene that involves the delivery of the ring via robotic crab due to everyone social distancing and not able to be in real life contact 😆😆

You are a romance author ??? 😱. So cool !!!

I want to read. Please link me or tell me the names of your books please.

Noiseless headphones, ear plugs advice in return for links of books.

Lol, I write under Katie Meyer, first book was The Puppy Proposal, it was recently repackaged in a two book format as Girl's Best Friend with another book. There are three in that series out right now, then two in another series. A fourth in that first series will be out beginning of next year.

And this one, first in a new series, is finally finished! (well, still editing, but the writing part is done!)

It's SOOO easy on a small touch screen while scrolling and I don't think you can undo it.  Also, if any of you are wondering who is randomly checking out your profiles, that's also me touching the wrong part of my screen.

I always forget that star ratings are a thing here until someone brings it up.

Yep.  The worst is when I accidentally mark the whole board as read.  I wish that button were somewhere else!
