Night Elf Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 I need a mask for my ds who does not want it hooked around his ears. He also can't tie bows well so that's out. What is an alternative that he can live with? He's starting college classes in August and I'm assuming people will still be wearing masks. Quote
Guest Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 Wide elastic that goes across the back of the head. That is the alternative that might work. 2 Quote
Laura Corin Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 My husband wears hearing aids with an element on the back of the ear, so loops around the ear were difficult. I just put on long elastic straps that go round the back of his head. No tying required. 1 Quote
Andani Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 We've used t-shirt sleeves, around the neck like an infinity scarf, then just pulled up over the nose when we want the mask. Quote
Sherry in OH Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 3/4 of my family prefers straps around the head to ear loops. Elastic cord and toggle allow for easy adjusting 1 Quote
almondbutterandjelly Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 My dh had trouble tying his masks, so we put snaps on one and velcro on the others. (He can't do ear loops due to hearing aids.) Quote
Pen Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 (edited) This design that I got for my son has two elastics for all around head that can be tied off to right length for wearer. Even though the models are mostly female it fits my average male headed with small beard teen well—could still work if he were bigger headed, though I am not sure it would fit if he both had big male head and also a beard. After nose wire and elastics adjusting to conform well, It fits enough that the cotton visibly moves in and out with each breath—yet is quite comfortable because of being a knit (not all are stretchy knits, but most are). One of the customer films shows it on a man. You could also imitate it perhaps if making your own. Edited May 26, 2020 by Pen Quote

I can’t sew to save my life, but all of the purchased masks have been a fail here. This sounds like it might work. Quote

Frosch Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 We have ones with 550 cord and plastic toggles/cord locks. I have a kid with a latex allergy so most elastics are out and I didn't want to tie straps into my hair so I made all of ours with cord locks that I had from a sock holder. 2 Quote
catz Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 (edited) You could also just get cord locks to use with the tie models as an option too. I made tie masks, but we have rigged ours at times with pony tail holders to work more like an elastic mask when we want something quick on/off. Like when my daughter went to the ortho. You can also get/make bands to work with the the ear elastic types so they don't hook to the ears. Edited May 26, 2020 by FuzzyCatz 1 Quote
Pen Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 Might be this? https://foursixty.com/los-angeles-apparel/185045275/ that was what led me to go for it for my adult male son? Quote
Sneezyone Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 (edited) Almost any mask with a casing can be retrofitted with a cord lock. This allows for easy fit adjustment too. Following Patty Joana’s suggestion, I make ‘em like this now. Edited May 26, 2020 by Sneezyone 1 Quote
Arcadia Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 https://rzmask.com/collections/m2-mask/products/titanium-m2-mask in the safety green color is popular here. Many wear them over a earloop mask or N95 mask at clinics' waiting areas. They are not meant for COVID. Quote
