Gobblygook Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 (edited) Are youth sports in your area up and running for the summer? And if they are, will you allow your kids to participate? Our governor just allowed small groups, under 10, to begin practices. No games yet, and social distancing is still in effect. I can see how they can do drills that allow for that distancing. I have two soccer players who have been resigned to not being able to play this season, but I wonder if outdoor soccer might be relatively safe with some modifications (no throw-ins, for example.) My high school basketball player is convinced that his team will have summer indoor workouts starting in a few weeks, but somehow I see that as less likely and far less safe than soccer outdoors. Selkie Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 From what I've heard, youth sports aren't going to be allowed in our state until late July or August at the earliest. Quote
SKL Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 Some are, some are not. I got an email from the nearby suburb where my kids go to school. They were going to start baseball soon, but not tee-ball because they don't trust the little ones to follow the rules. They are going to start tennis and golf. The pools will be closed. Horse riding has already been back for a couple of weeks. Our TKD dojang is opening this coming week. They got special permission from the governor. Quote
sassenach Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 My son’s summer ball is still planning on moving forward. The first tournament is mid-June but we’re anticipating that that will be moved back. Quote
vonfirmath Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 My friend's daughter is very excited that they are about to start softball up. Quote
teachermom2834 Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 Baseball is starting up here (in TN) and in GA where my oldest ds lives and is going to coach a travel team. Not sure what rules are in place. I read an article in the local paper about high school sports. They are allowing fall sports to start practicing/conditioning in groups less than ten. So they are bringing players into the weight room, etc in shifts with 9 players and one coach. They will then start allowing winter and spring sports to start. So here some degree of basketball might happen this summer. I expect that club teams/ younger kids' teams will all have looser rules than what the high school is operating under. My daughter's dance studio opened up and started holding classes in early May. The studio is very small and most classes have four or five kids at the most so it is pretty socially distanced and the owner changed the schedule around to build in cleaning time between classes. mlktwins Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 I'm in No. VA. Our summer swim team/league was cancelled. Our county has closed all county pools and water parks for the summer. I'm not sure about summer camps and other sports, mine only swim, but another county has cancelled all summer camps through August. Schools here are figuring out how they will handle the fall. I will be surprised if fall sports start up on time. But...we are still on lock-down in my county. Most of VA is open, but several counties near DC are not open yet. 2 Quote
RootAnn Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 Outdoor sports practices allowed starting June 1st. Games can start two weeks later. Weight training allowed to start June 1st. My kids had already decided not to participate before COVID-19 disrupted everything. If gymnastics starts up, I'll have to decide if my DD goes back to work. Quote
Lecka Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 They are desperate to start here locally, but the state has not set guidelines yet. Quote
SounderChick Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 A few sports will be allowed in phase 2 outdoor ones without much contact. So horseback riding and shooting are planning to move forward. I am comfortable with the setups they have. Track cancelled which I think was the right call they simply don't have the space to distance for the number of kids. Gymnastics has been given permission to start back up in phase two with lots of rules not so convinced about that one. Quote

We're in Hampton Roads and things are opening up here. Still, DD's cheer coaches have basically stopped communicating about Varsity tryouts and such so I assume fall sports will be called off. Quote
mom2scouts Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 Summer swim team has been canceled this year. All pools, except a few private pools, have been closed for the summer. Our parks and rec isn't doing youth soccer or baseball, but some of the club teams are getting ready to start. Gymnastics is opening June 1st, but the long break has caused dd to decide to retire from the sport (although the gym owner sent me an email asking if there was anything he could do to get her to reconsider). At this point I don't even want to ask my kids if they want to do anything. Things get rescheduled and rescheduled and finally canceled and I'm tired of the constant disappointments. 3 1 Quote

I am just not even going to get hopes up anymore as the disappointment repeatedly has been hard. We just had something we have looked forward to and DD earned the right to participate in October cancelled. The constant disappointments are just taking a toll on mental health. Rumor mill here is talking about how when TKD is allowed to open, it will be no touch completely. If it is, I think we will take a break from it until it resumes to normal. Megs Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 I live in Louisiana. My kids rec baseball league canceled for the summer, and offered us a prorated refund of HALF the registration fee. Quote
Farrar Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 No. The city just moved to online summer camps. No sports allowed yet, though I heard they may open tennis courts and tracks at some point. Quote

Nobody allowed in courts, not even siblings. Quote

Since literally everyone in my house relies on performing arts in lots of ways, this is a massive concern for us. I see no easy solutions. The tennis courts and some of the other outdoor things I've just heard rumors may open. They filled the pools, but I'm dubious. The young single folks I know apparently have been playing a lot of bocce with friends - easy to bring your roommate or partner and play with other pairs of folks without ever coming near them. You don't even touch each others balls. 2 Quote

BarbecueMom Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 Oldest is playing (non-travel) baseball, and the older two will possibly play the county golf tournament in July. Soccer was cancelled, swimming is still closed. We kept our youngest out of peewee ball, because it's practically a contact sport at that age, and he still can't keep his fingers out of his dang nose. We play a lot as a family (I think he robbed my oldest of extra bases this morning, haha), and he's had to keep up with the big kids before during park day sandlot games, so he'll be fine to jump back in next spring. Between the MASSIVE rule changes/guidelines and our county's numbers, I'm fine with baseball going on. For many reasons, we had already decided it would be the first priority, even before family gatherings. I haven't registered them for golf yet, but I have until mid-June to make that decision. Usually my kids are in the same division and group, but oldest moved up this year. It would be nice if they switch to primarily sibling groups for this year, even if they are playing different divisions. Quote

MIAMI'S junior intensive went virtual too. I am not sure if they are worth it to do. This after we spent the cash to build a studio for them. I know you were considering doing Ballet West. Our school never did any live zoom classes for level . The director teaches a zoom classes twice a week for upper s and pros, but there is no feedback, so I am just debating if these intensive are worth it. I just reached out to our school to see when the would have kids in the studio again. It has been nothing since April. Edited May 23, 2020 by mommyoffive Quote

It's a pretty small studio so they don't get much more than 9 or 10 in the upper classes anyway. No younger kids yet. 1 Quote

ScoutTN Posted May 24, 2020 Posted May 24, 2020 (edited) Our private pool opens 5/29 and there will be modified swim team. No meets, just exercise and sunshine. Some outdoor sports are on, in some leagues. Near us: baseball, flag football, tennis, golf, soccer. Cross country practices for July are still on the schedule. The YMCAs are all still closed. Public recreational facilities vary widely. Dd's dance instructor is having small camps in late July, but we will be out of town. Just online classes for now. Edited May 24, 2020 by ScoutTN Quote

My daughter did go back -- mainly because we are moving in three weeks and leaving the studio was already going to be so hard - then with the pandemic she was really worried to never see her ballet friends again. It's been a rough time having everything shut down right before a cross country move! The masks, the hand washing... I am ok with it all. If it were 20 kids crowded in it would feel different, though. There are never that many kids - usually 5-10 max. Quote

He toyed with the idea of going out for ABT NY or Kaatsbaan or somewhere new... and he had the option of Boston or a few others. In the end, he decided on SFB's virtual program. He's been very, very uneven lately. We're upgrading the basement set up. Again. Sigh. I just ordered like another $150 worth of stuff. More flooring stuff, new webcam so we can point it at him from the ceiling and he can be seen better. We're flipping the room so the TV monitor will face that way and he'll really be able to see. And I'm going to add mirrors where I can. I... can't even. I can tell you that our experience with Zoom classes has definitely been better than that and has included a lot of feedback. So if your kids wanted to do Washington's virtual intensive, they really are doing a great job. Quote
.... Posted May 24, 2020 Posted May 24, 2020 Our sports started back up last week. Ds17 is doing Track Club again. The meets keep cancelling, though - which is fine. We don't really need meets to do Track Club. It's all outside, anyways. I know the coach has to do staggered practices where only a certain number of people are allowed at each practice. I heard TAIAO gave the ok to start football preseason conditioning - is it June 8th? I'd have to ask my son. So, he'll start that soon, too. Football season is a go for the fall. My youngest 3 started ballet last week. Eh, so far, so good. Quote
