I can't get food down my throat. I can get it my mouth but if I try to get it down I vomit. I've been this way all day. I've eaten two granola bars today. I'm so hungry I could cry. Is there something I can do?

Sounds like you are sick.

or pregnant?

Second trimester.

Any nausea, or just can't swallow properly? There could be something going on with your esophagus.

I've had nausea the whole time, but this is different. I'm not nauseated, put food in my mouth, and my stomach contents come up. It's so much fun.

Can you drink thick liquids like milkshakes or a smoothie?  I had a really sensitive gag reflex when I was pregnant, especially the second time when I had hypermesis and was constantly nauseated.  And any degree of gagging led to vomiting.  Sometimes putting food in my mouth was sufficient to trigger it.  Because the nausea has persisted into the second trimester, you might have hypermesis.  I hope not, because it is brutal but some of what you are saying sound familiar to me.  I couldn't eat my entire pregnancy, other than small amounts of a very short list of foods that I found worked for me.  I could have non-dairy smoothies but milk or ice cream was a no-go.  Pregnant women are frigging super heroes.  I hope you feel better soon.  Your doctor might have some anti-emetic options for you.

Could be even really bad reflux - regurgitation vs vomiting?'

Can you get liquids down?  I would try some high-calorie, nutrient-dense smoothie.

Or a milkshake?

Any liquid is fine.

I don't think it's a gag thing. I really don't know though. It's weird.

Is it when you try to swallow, or just as soon as food is in your mouth?

Either. I guess it's gotten worse? So from swallow to now just entering.

I had that happen for like a day in 2nd trimester. It was the craziest day. I sort of freaked out. I had felt vaguely nauseated early in pregnancy but not the stereotypical throwing up sort of thing. Just off and queasy sometimes. And I'd had a few other things, like the round ligament pain, which was rotten. But at some point in 2nd trimester, I spent a day feeling fine... but I just couldn't eat. It started in the evening with dh out to dinner. I ate like half my meal and then I had a bite and it suddenly came back up. I was so embarrassed! It was so sudden! And I felt fine. We left and I tried to eat something at home, but same experience. I just felt weird. In the morning, I was afraid to eat. It just seemed like a bad idea. But by the next late afternoon, I was hungry again and cautiously tried something and I was back to normal. Thank goodness. I kept thinking it would come back but... nope. Just that one day.

I think that's actually kind of good...means not a motility issue, but a nausea type of thing.

Keep drinking, have a smoothie if you can, and call your doctor in the morning. Or before if it gets worse.

I want ribs and macaroni and cheese. I haven't had ribs in years. I feel like I could eat that. Girlfriend texted to try oatmeal, banana and rice and I knew right off the bat I couldn't eat a banana. It's like I know what's causing this. I grabbed the granola bars because I just knew they would go down. I don't understand!

A day? OK. I'll do this.

That's true.

My insurance got cancelled. It's a thing. I think I can get it fixed soon.

Any chance you qualify for medicaid while pregnant? In a lot of states the requirements are much looser during pregnancy, and it can be done online.

I was on medicaid, received a notice that it was cancelled because I did not send something in, and told to call. The system is so overburdened I've yet to get through. I'm sure it will be dealt with soon enough.

You're far enough along your stomach is being pushed up. I'm not a doctor, but when that happened to me I would *gently* push down on that point right below the middle of your ribs where your stomach is and that might just push it down a bit.

Well you notice the other person said theirs improved after they went to bed. Try lying down and *super gently* pushing with just the tips of your fingers right below those ribs and see if it goes down a bit and relieves the pressure. Try looking for pictures of where your stomach and esophagus meet.

No.

I know I'm weird, but I'm not doing this. I'm sorry. Thank you!

If you have been vomiting, I wonder if your esophagus is irritated. I wonder if drinking something icy cold before/during eating will help. I don't know if a person can take it during pregnancy, but maybe Maalox will sooth some irritation by neutralizing acid and coating the throat.  Or maybe something like a numbing throat lozenge.

I puked liquids when my reflux was bad. I had to resort to ice-cream. Cold and slushy food worked. So things like chilled thick milkshakes.

that sounds physical and a reaction to the motion of swallowing..  My mom had difficult swallowing, - she was assessed by a SLP.

Dh also did at one time, but it went away.

I've eaten twice. I'm over my rib craving. I don't like ribs.

I'm never doing this again. It sucked.

Ok, if we didn't know before, this clinches it. This is just a weird pregnancy thing.

I was pretty sure before, when you said some food was fine, others were not. Then 99 percent sure when you could eat pizza, lol. And POSITIVE now that the food you wanted you now hate. I'm so sorry.

I had that the worst with baby 1. I remember being starving, and ordering a giant plate of fried seafood (my favorite) and it arrived and I took one look at it and said, "take it away, I can't eat that". I am positive I'd have puked if I tried. I also couldn't eat chicken with that kid. Or sit next to someone eating chicken without gagging.

Oddly, I craved milk and cannned peaches. I have never, before or since, liked either of those things.

Pregnancy is WEIRD. I'm so, so sorry. Eat what works.
