lovinmyboys Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 I am thinking of re-instituting afternoon quiet time this summer. I’m thinking an hour of quiet, alone, screen free activities. My kids are 8, 10, 11, 13 and all boys. I’m thinking of purchasing things like tinker crates, origami paper, and crossword puzzle books. Any other ideas for things along those lines especially for the oldest. Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 My 14yob likes to paint D&D figurines, carve with a knife, do puzzles, and read. He just finished a year of reading The Wheel of Time series (15 books) during quiet time. Before that he read an equally long series by LE Modesitt. 1 Quote

Spryte Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 A subscription to audible, and a device for listening? We like wireless - so portable - and DS uses an old Amazon Tap - not sure they still make those. Art supplies. Paints. Clay. Markers. Alcohol markers are cool. Those wooden craft kits that make intricate things - we’ve done a working clock, a music box, a pinball machine. Along those lines, I’ve seen some interesting miniature rooms and building kits. Lego. Rube Goldberg making supplies. Marble runs. Comic book making supplies and a how to book. Whittling supplies. Wood burning supplies. Foam art. We use the mats for covering garage floors to make tons of stuff. DS is pretty advanced and uses heat guns and wood burning to make some amazing props. If you want to get into that, it’s addictive and fun. There are some great books on how to make foam armor, etc, to get started. Spray paint art. Kids here make some really cool spray paint art with stencils and poster board. Google for ideas and tutorials. I could go on and on ... Quote
Tanaqui Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 Hardware, wood, and a book of instructions for making simple crafts. It's not so quiet with the hammering, but at least they're out of your hair. Quote
Erica in OR Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 The Mini Weapons of Mass Destruction book series has some fun builds using household materials. My son also really liked extreme dot-to-dot books. Erica in OR 1 Quote
