Scarlett Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 We are taking our 5 month old pup to obedience school tomorrow and leaving her for at least 7 days. I am going to miss her so much. 😞 I hope she doesn't think we abandoned her.  Quote
Scarlett Posted May 8, 2020 Author Posted May 8, 2020 Just now, Pen said: She’ll probably be fine and do great! They have a Goldendoodle currently they are doing obedience with. I imagine them just playing together and having fun.  1 Quote
J-rap Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 I haven't heard of schools like that, where you actually send them away to "boot camp" to be trained. Â Interesting idea! Â Let us know if you see changes when he returns. Quote
mmasc Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 I have a friend who just did this with her pup (I hadn’t ever heard of it!) and the pup had fun and came back very well trained! They also have her tips on how to keep the training going once home. Quote
Pawz4me Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 I've done it in the past, but I doubt it's something I'd ever do again. Not that there was anything wrong, but I know a LOT more about training and dog behavior and psychology than I did then.I believe in the importance of the bond that's made from training a dog yourself, and the benefit of working in the dog's own territory if possible. It's absolutely critical that you keep up and build on the training when she gets home. Follow whatever instructions the trainer gives you and more. Good luck! 3 Quote
Chris in VA Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 My mil and fil sent their dogs away and they came back beautifully trained. They definitely kept it up (and received training also in follow up appts). I agree the ideal is either to have someone come into your home or for you to go to bootcamp w your pet, but I have seen this way work very well also. Hope it works for y'all. 1 Quote
