Since in this case it’s a virus we are concerned about, that won’t be an issue since a virus needs a host to replicate. The masks likely become less effective if damp, but at least they’re not going to allow the virus to multiply.

Right, and after being fully caught up and counted, unfortunately that means the excess deaths will only go up. They aren’t going to decide a bunch of people counted as dead didn’t actually die. Looking at the current excess death charts around the world is terribly sobering.

editing to insert a graphic with excess deaths charted:

I think the concern is during a mask shortage people trying to conserve them won’t change often enough and will make them self sick with something else.

Possible. At work (hospital) we have to wear a mask all day while in the building (12 hour shifts) and we’re only given a new one after 5 days, so it makes me wonder if just wearing one for short periods of time out in public might not be too risky, especially if the mask dries out in between.

Yeah you are probably right. Seems like there isn’t a clear cut answer given different authorities are giving different messages.  It does seem like the aerosol transmission is the biggest risk so it makes sense to wear one.

The Atlantic is tackling the current increase in conspiracy theories with a series of articles: https://www.theatlantic.com/shadowland/

I read this one https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2020/06/qanon-nothing-can-stop-what-is-coming/610567/  which asserts that QAnon might become it's own religious sect:

Quote

The Seventh-day Adventists and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are thriving religious movements indigenous to America. Do not be surprised if QAnon becomes another. It already has more adherents by far than either of those two denominations had in the first decades of their existence. People are expressing their faith through devoted study of Q drops as installments of a foundational text, through the development of Q-worshipping groups, and through sweeping expressions of gratitude for what Q has brought to their lives.

ETA: I don't necessarily think of Adventists and Mormons as conspiracy theorists, btw, even if I do not share the same beliefs--the article discusses how new religious groups are often born in times of upheaval.
