We bought our first artificial tree last Christmas!  We left for two months immediately after Christmas and I didn't have time to figure this out, so it's still lying on the floor of our den covered in 3 garbage bags and looking like we're hiding a body.  It does come apart (into three pieces), and I need to be able to pack it as small as possible so I can fit it into our apartment building's storage room.  (I'm not used to tiny storage space, but I love it!  Great motivation for not keeping stuff.)

We had this same dilemma yesterday.  We normally just leave it put together in the basement storage.  We are downsizing considerably and that is no longer an option.   My husband went on Amazon and found artificial tree bags for a reasonable price.   Ordered!

You should be able to bend the branches up against the trunk.

Like Paige, we put ours back in the original box every year. If you didn't keep the box, there are bags sold for the purpose, but I don't think they are as protective as a box.

You could buy a big enough box, or, for maximum flexibility, buy three boxes (one for each piece). Mark them: Christmas tree 1 of 3, Christmas tree 2 of 3, Christmas tree 3 of 3.
