gardenmom5
a local station posted this story on how seattle handled the 1918 flu pandemic. apparently, they were quick to shut down. we were also one of the first states to shut down for this. (but we were also the first hotspot.)
73349
There was also an article in The Atlantic & how Philadelphia went on with a planned parade, leading to thousands of deaths. 1
AmandaVT
I just listened to a "Stuff You Should Know" podcast about the 1918 flu. It was fascinating. Great podcast in general too!
Farrar
The charts that compare the 1918 flu in Philadelphia (parade!) and St. Louis (no one go out!) are literally like looking at the flatten the curve illustrations. I guess we can only hope it works out that well now.
Shoeless
I have already told everyone I know that when our small town says "Let's go ahead with a Memorial Day/4th of July parade!" that they should 100% not go, because of Philadelphia. 1
Scarlett
Then there is the story of Gunnison Colorado during the 1918 pandemic. https://www.9news.com/article/news/local/next/gunnison-spanish-flu-epidemic-response-coronavirus-research/73-67791a7a-0492-48d4-abe2-b0184f672825
Skippy
One interesting huge difference from today is that President Woodrow Wilson didn't even release a statement about the flu. The federal government did next to nothing. It was a different time.
