Hi all, in case you haven't seen my previous posts, I have two sons I'm homeschooling with my wife: Jack (15) and Rory (13). Recently,  Rory has been interested in prisoner of war stories and even came up with a game called Downed Pilot wherein the "pilots" have to evade capture by enemy soldiers and make it back to base. Rory asked me to join in, and today I agreed that if they got all their homework and chores done before dinner, we could play Downed Pilot until dinner. Well, they got everything done, so by 4:00 we were able to play.

Rory was a pilot and Jack was an enemy soldier. They gave me the choice of which to be, and I decided to be a fellow pilot. The goal was to get from the bedroom on the top floor to the shed out back, which would be the base. Our basement was the prisoner of war camp. In order to win, both Rory and I had to get to base, and Jack had to stop us.

Rory and I split up, figuring we had a better chance that way, because if one of us got captured, the other could rescue him. I easily managed to get to the shed, but Rory wasn't with me. After awhile, I checked my watch and realized that he had probably been caught.

I snuck back inside where my wife was just starting dinner. I asked her if she had seen Rory and she said yes, that Jack had been escorting him to the basement about 5-10 minutes previously. She said his hands were bound, so she figured he was in need of rescue (she's familiar with the boys' games). I stated that's it's a good thing I was here. "Yeah, right," said my wife jokingly, "you'll probably just get captured yourself." I laughed and headed on my way.

When I got to the basement, I opened the door a crack. I could see Rory, lying on the floor bound hand and foot. Not seeing Jack anywhere, I pulled the door open more. When Rory saw me, I mouthed "is it safe?" He nodded, so I went to him and removed his bonds. Just then, we heard footsteps, so we ducked into hiding. Jack came down, nerf gun in hand, looking very serious. When he saw the ropes lying on the ground, he started to search the room. Unfortunately, he knows all the hiding spots, so we were quickly found. I told Rory to run, and I put hands up and stood between my boys so that Rory could escape.

"You're my prisoner!" declared Jack.

"What are you going to do with me?" I asked, trying as best I could to stay in character as a captured soldier.

"I'm going to capture your friend as well," he sneered, playing along in his villainous role.

"Oh good," I retorted, "that will give me a chance to escape!"

"We'll see about that," said Jack, "now sit down and put your hands behind your back."

I obeyed my captor and offered no resistance as he tied my wrists together with one cord of rope and used the other to bind my ankles. Once I had been secured, he shouldered his gun and went to look for Rory. I wiggled against my bindings, but I had to hand it to Jack, he was pretty good at this. The ropes held firm, so all I could do was sit there and wait, trussed up and helpless.

A few minutes passed, and Jack returned with Rory. "Caught you both!" he declared triumphantly. Rory was tied up and placed next to me, then Jack left. "What now?" I asked. Rory said that we had to free ourselves. I nodded and told him to move back to back. We put our bound hands together and I started to work on his knot. After several moments, I managed to pull it loose, and he shook his hands free. Rory untied me, and then we resumed our mission.

We decided to stick together this time and sneak out the front door, then go around back. We paused at the corner of the house, because Jack was patrolling. He hadn't seen us, so we ducked back and tried to come up with a plan. We considered making a run for it, but thought that might result in one of us being caught. We also considered waiting it out, but a glance at our watches told us there were only 15 minutes left until dinner, so he might just wait it out.

"Either way," said Rory, "we should do something. Worst thing that could happen is we get captured."

"That wouldn't be too bad for you," I teased, "since you like captivity stories."

"Yeah," he agreed.

After thinking it over minute, I said "you know what? What if we get caught on purpose? We'll lose the game and your mother will probably tease me mercilessly, but I'm here to have fun with you, and if being your fellow captive is the way to do it, it would be an honor."

"Really?" asked Rory.

"Yes," I said, "follow my lead." We both stepped out confidently and walked toward the shed. I made sure to make as much noise as possible to get Jack's attention. As soon as he turned around, I stopped and said "we surrender, sir, as prisoners of war."

Jack ordered us to put our hands on our heads and escorted us back to the basement. I suggested to him that maybe Rory and I could stay his prisoners until dinnertime, and he agreed. Jack grabbed the longest piece of rope there was, and bound my hands in front of me with about 1/3 of it, then used the other end to tie Rory in the same manner. The middle third was used to guide us around (which I personally thought was very creative).

We prisoners were marched from the basement upstairs until we came to the wall just outside the kitchen, where Jack gestured for us to stop and remain silent. With one hand clutching the rope and staying just out of view, Jack stepped out and greeted his mom, then told her he had a gift for her. I blushed, realizing what was about to happen.

"What is it?" my wife asked.

"Prisoners!" declared Jack, then tugged on the rope, pulling us into view. At the sight of Rory and me with our hands bound and shuffling awkwardly, my wife burst out laughing.

"He sure got you good," she said.

"Look mom, I'm a prisoner of war!" said Rory, holding up his tied hands for her to see.

"You make a very good prisoner," encouraged my wife. Then she turned to me. "And what might you be doing? Certainly you aren't a prisoner yourself! I thought you said you were going to rescue Rory."

"I got captured," I admitted sheepishly.

My wife smiled. Turning to Jack, she said. "Well, now we have two captives, bound and at our disposal. Do you know what we should do with them?"

"What?" asked Jack.

"Untie their hands so they can wash them. It's time to eat!"

And that's the story of how I got captured with my son, by my son! If you had told me two months ago that I would have this little adventure, I'd have called you crazy. But I must admit, it was a blast! Perhaps I will have to participate again sometime...let me know what you think in the comments below.
