regentrude Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 (edited) We are currently interviewing candidates for an open position and have publicly announced a no handshake policy at work. At this point, we are not so much concerned about actual virus spread (none in our state), as more about putting the poor people at ease who show up for a two day job interview and want to make a good impression; they would be worried whether shake or not shake is considered the polite thing now. mom2scouts Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 I went to visit my elderly parents last weekend. When I leave after visiting, my mom and I usually exchange a quick kiss on the cheek. My mom had a bad cold and, when I went to leave, she told me not to kiss her and instead she grabbed my hand.🤦♀️ I tried not to touch her hand and she was offended and I had to explain to her that touching her hand was more likely to spread the illness than a peck on the cheek. It will be interesting to see how dh navigates this. He's a super friendly guy, but he's also really, really bad at reading social cues. 1 Quote

I was actually thinking about this just this morning, because if I were to go to a job interview soon, I would not be inclined to shake hands. I was wondering if it would be extremely gauche to just say, “I would shake your hand, but I’m refraining from that presently due to germ transfer.” Or something. I do think, even without Covid-19, it’s worth pondering the handshake due to germ transfer. 2 Quote
