Darcy in FL
Ds has done Prima Latina and we're working through LC1 now. He's a little bored (OK- a lot bored :( ) with LC1 and I'm wondering if we could just move onto Henle next year (6th grade) instead of completing LC2. Any thoughts or insights? Anne in Hawaii
We really bogged down in LC2, and Henle was a relief. Cheryl Lowe has a good article about Henle here, and if you click on the Course Outline at the bottom of that page, you'll see that Henle can begin as early as 5th grade. If he's bored in LCI, though, I'm not sure Henle is going to be exciting. It's a good, thorough program, but it's not colorful or "exciting" the way some programs are. FWIW, we're about halfway through Henle 1, and it's working fine for us (dd 8th grade & ds 10th grade).
LisaNY
I used Henle when my older dd was in 7th gr. 6th gr. seems a little young. Have you thought about doubling up on your lessons? You could move quickly through LC I & II, which will better prepare your ds for Henle. Just a suggestion. :)

I think his boredom is from the fact that he needs more explanations than he is getting. He'd prefer to see a little "bigger picture" than he is getting in regards to the declensions and things. Beth in SW WA
Darcy, My dc 10 & 12 are buzzing through LC 1 & 2 this year. I wanted to keep it movin' and skakin' so they don't get bored AT ALL w/ Latin. I'm speeding up the pace and expecting a lot from them and I think it is working well. They are retaining the info and I've never heard them complain about Latin once since we started in August. They also meet w/ a tutor 1 hour/week to spice things up. We just added FMOR to help us gear up for Natl. Latin Exam. I'm not sure quite where we are headed next year. My short list is Henle, LItCT or Wheelocks through our local school district. Either way, we will need a tutor or online class because I don't know ANY Latin (but I truly believe in it) :).

In hindsight, I should have skipped Prima Latina and done LC1 last year and LC2 this year. So tell me how you keep it "buzzing"---what does your week look like? Are you doing two lessons a week to get through both books this year?
Kendall
Yes, you could go to Henle and it does give the bigger picture. But it wouldn't hurt to do as others have suggested and go quickly through LCI and II, focusing on the forms and some on the vocabulary and pick and choose from the worksheets and/or do them aloud. My 3rd son did LCI and II in 3rd/4th grade and is doing Henle I this year in 5th grade. We are planning to take 3 years to complete it. His older brothers did LCI only(and not too thoroughly) and started Henle in 6th/8th. HTH, Kendall
Susan in SoCal
Henle could very well be just the ticket. I think it has fabulous explanations. The exercises are good, thorough, challenging. Depending on the student, I don't think 6th grade is too young to be using Henle - so long as you're moving at the student's rate of mastery (however quick or slow that may be). You could always try it. If, for some reason, it's too difficult, you could always head back to LCII.

It is so great that they have each other to work with (and compete with) :) My ds 12 wants to keep up w/ his sister, 10. She is the natural Latinista (is that even a word?). Our tutor also sends home Luedere games/puzzles w/ the kids which they like. Good luck!!
