mlktwins Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 (edited) So...I finally tried melatonin this week. The first night I tried 2.5 mg and fell asleep quickly (which is not my sleep problem anyway) and woke up twice during the night. The next night I took 5 mg and did a little better, but did not stay asleep as long as I would like. My only side effect (possibly)meas a nightmare on my 1st night taking 5 mg (I don’t isually have nightmares). I’m going to try extended release and see if I do better staying alseep with those. Any brands you take and recommend? Should I start with a lower dosage again or just try 5 mg from the start? Edited February 8, 2020 by mlktwins Correct spelling...need more coffee 😁 Quote
Soror Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 I used Natrol, found it on Amazon with good reviews, I am only using 1 mg. 5 mg is a pretty big dose. I'd maybe try the 3 mg extended release. I was taking 1 mg sublingual before and it put me to sleep but I couldn't stay asleep, I am sleeping better with the time release I do wake up some but do not stay awake. I do not have bad dreams with this level and no grogginess the next day as long as I take it sufficiently early for my wake up time. 1 Quote

Yes, I found out this morning, when I got up at 5 am to take the boys' to swim practice, that I might need to take it much earlier on Friday nights or not take it at all. Having a hard time today -- LOL. Most days of the week I get up early, but only because I want to (or maybe just because I don't sleep well). I can sleep in a little more if needed. 1 Quote

Any particular 3rd party seller you've used and had good luck with? 1 Quote

I've always had good luck w/ 3rd party sellers as long as they had good reviews. 1 Quote
KatieJ Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 I use Natrol as well, from Costco. I recently read that melatonin should be taken 3-4 hours before bed so the serotonin has time to start working. I have been doing for several weeks and i am sleeping better. 1 Quote

Really, I have not heard that, I aim for an hour before I want to be asleep and that works well for me to not be groggy the next day. Quote
mlktwins Posted June 25, 2020 Author Posted June 25, 2020 OP here! I never did order the extended release melatonin, but am ordering it today. I had been nervous to take any of it, but I'm taking 5 mg at bedtime and am at least getting some decent sleep. I just don't stay asleep so will finally try the extended release. I had been worried about side effects, but am not having any. Hope it stays that way with the extended release version :-). Quote
Spryte Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 (edited) Good luck! If you need another rec, we love Source Naturals here. It’s been the best for us. My doc recommends sublingual (under the tongue, dissolve slowly), which I do, but DS takes it as a pill and it still works fine. He’s usually got his retainer in when it’s time to take it, so it’s easier that way. We use 5 mg, but have big ugly sleep issues. I’d start smaller. It’s potent. For occasional night waking, DS and I both keep it on the nightstand, and take an extra half. Edited June 25, 2020 by Spryte 1 Quote

Probably because I am old and female (LOL), but also because of all the stress from the last 2 years. And...the stress is still there. I am exhausted every night. No trouble falling asleep ever. I have a lot of trouble staying asleep or getting a restful sleep. Trying to find a solution! 1 Quote
