Lady Florida. Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 My eyelashes are fairly short and they clump together even before I apply mascara. Though they've always been short they didn't always clump. I'm wondering if this is another lovely age-related change. At my age I have zero interest in the current eyelash fashion. I just want to make my own eyelashes look better. I use a basic spoolie that came with my brush set. I brush them both before and after applying mascara in an attempt to get them to separate. I've tried all kinds of anti-clumping mascara brands/types but because my natural eyelashes clump on their own, none of the brands are really helpful. So... Would a better quality spoolie help? If so, any suggestions? Does anyone else have natural clumping eyelashes and if so do you do have a trick to separate them? (mine do this on the outer edges, not all the way across) Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 What’s your arm motion as you move the spoolie through your lashes? Are you moving the brush zig-zag as you brush up? My favorite spoolie is the Lancôme Hypnose drama waterproof mascara one. 1 Quote
KungFuPanda Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 I like the covergirl one in the purple tub That has the spoolie with the rubber bristles. It separates better than a regular one. Even when I use other brands, I make a pass with this one to separate better. My lashes are fine, but long, so they like to clump. 2 Quote

marbel Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 (edited) I use a lash primer. My daughter bought me one at Ulta that works well; it helps prevent clumping and helps keep mascara lasting longer. I also keep a dry brush (I too had never heard the term spoolie) in case there is still clumping. Edited February 4, 2020 by marbel 1 Quote

The title intrigued me as I have never heard of a "spoolie". I thought it must be those scissor handled crimper/curlers. What a funny name for a brush. SPOO is an abbreviation for standard poodle on the poodle forums. It makes me wish i could change my screenname there to spoolie... probably already taken. Don't have a SPOO right now anyway so do not use those forums anymore. Late night ramblings... I never heard of the term either until my hair stylist was talking to another stylist. They're both young and into the latest eyelash fashion. When I heard them I thought I was out of the loop not knowing what to call it. When I posted here I thought I should use the current term in case I was right about not being up on the latest terms. 😂 1 Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 It’s a piece of advice (the zig zag motion) I have seen a few places. My eye lashes are long but thin and they have a tendency to clump on the outside rim. This does help. The other advice I heard was to curl first, then prime them with powderbut I am too low maintenance for that. If you want to jump down the rabbit hole of applying mascara, there are a bazillion videos on YouTube. 1 Quote
Suzanne in ABQ Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Have you tried scrubbing your eyelids with a warm washcloth and a tiny dab of baby shampoo? There may be some old skin cells or (yuck, eyelash mites) interfering with your eyelash follicles, causing the eyelashes to grow at weird angles. Daily scrubbing, for a week or so, may make a difference and help them grow out straight and not clump together. Quote

AbcdeDooDah Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 (edited) I use a silicone one. You can buy them on Amazon. I hardly need to use it all all anymore, though, after finding my new favorite mascara, Eyeko Beach. It is so good I replaced my old favorite IT mascara. https://www.amazon.com/NUOLUX-Mascara-Brush-Disposable-Silicone/dp/B01M5CGXLV/ref=sr_1_7?crid=JC9UGQDWSWXX&keywords=silicone+spoolies+eyelash&qid=1580927774&sprefix=silicone+spool%2Caps%2C209&sr=8-7 Edited February 5, 2020 by AbcdeDooDah 1 Quote

I just forget and only remember a couple of times a week. I'll try to remember to use them daily. 1 Quote

The It Superhero didn't give them to me but it changed or something and was no longer working for me. I love this one and want to try a non waterproof because my eyelashes look fantastic with this brand. 1 Quote
Paige Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Try Younique. I have pretty thick and long lashes but they are really light. They clump terribly when I use mascara and the combs don't ever help much. My mom gave me some younique and I am pretty impressed- no brush needed to unclump. 1 Quote

They're a thing, and they're quite common (like, you probably have them because practically everyone does). They're invisible to the naked eye. They like to eat the oil that comes out of your skin. You can google it if you want to see what they look like. (I'm gonna stop talking about them because my eyelids are itching now). 1 1 Quote
