mommyoffive Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 I was making a mix of brownies, put everything in the bowl and then looked at the box and saw it had a better if used by date of October 2018. Eat or not? Quote
Kassia Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 (edited) I wouldn't eat it. http://www.eatbydate.com/other/baking/cake-mix-shelf-life-expiration-date/ ETA: It might be fine, though... https://www.stilltasty.com/fooditems/index/16639 Edited January 30, 2020 by Kassia 1 Quote
mmasc Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 I wouldn’t. Over a year just seems too long for me to risk it. 1 Quote
Arctic Bunny Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 You’d have smelt if it was rancid when it came out of the box. It may not rise properly, but I’d give it a go! Quote
Ali in OR Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 I'd probably test one before anyone else did. And then another. And then maybe one more to be sure. 5 2 10 Quote
RootAnn Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 I'd probably make it & eat it. I used to work for a major food manufacturer who would say to toss it. As long as all the seals are intact, a year past the use by date probably wouldn't stop me from box brownies. But, they will likely be a little off-tasting.... Quote
SKL Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 I would give it a sniff. Generally I toss something that much past expiration date. But if I've already mixed it up, I would be tempted to eat it anyway, if the smell and texture seemed OK. Quote
Lori D. Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 Dry mixes, if not sealed in plastic or foil inside the box, can develop mold, and if allergic to mold, a person can have a potentially fatal allergic reaction to the mold. Again, that possibility is if the expired dry mix is loose in the box, and not in a sealed plastic or foil bag within the box. This is the case that was documented -- it was with expired pancake mix and a young man who had a fatal allergic reaction to the mold on the dry mix. 1 Quote

Katy Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 It's fine. They might not rise as much but it's safe. Quote
EKS Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 Totally eat. And 99% of the time, I'm a not-eat person. Quote
Carrie12345 Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 I’d probably eat a boxed brownie mix. But only because it’s a boxed brownie mix! I generally don’t eat things that are more than a few months out of date unless I’ve already put them in Mylar or jars. I’d make just about any exception for brownies, though! 1 Quote

Lori, am I reading this correctly that there's only ONE such documented case? Quote
