What are you learning yourself in 2020?

When I posted abou choosing AoPS for me Joy replied about how much she had enjoyed doing it. This got me thinking, what are you studying for yourself this year (or making yours kids study because YOU want to learn it!!)?

I am doing Latin with “So You Really Want To Learn Latin?” Last year I did Getting Started With Latin. I hadn’t retired then, so it took most of the year.

i realised my grammar is non existent when I started Latin last year and so I am working very quickly through memoria press English Grammar Recitation.

I just got an almost complete set of the Britannia Great Books from a second hand shop yesterday, and I’m reading “The Great Conversation “. There is a 10 year reading plan in the back of the first volume. This is a little (ok ...a lot...) daunting, but we will see how it goes.

And AoPS pre algebra when it gets here. Doing the videos and Alcumus until then.

I am studying Lord of the Rings and Tolkien with my DS.  (I never read any Tolkien.)  I'm also working on Algebra 2 via Dolciani to decide if I'm comfortable teaching it next year.

I did the entire AoPS prealgebra and algebra with one DD.  It was an experience. Enjoy!

I am actively working on learning Spanish and also dabbling in ASL.  I would also like to learn French, but I think that I need to get more grounded in Spanish first.  Maybe next year or 2022 for French.

I am also reading through a lot of classic literature that I missed in high school and college.

Junie, I just got most of a set of the Great Books from a second hand shop very cheaply (no one wants them apparently, and the set wasn’t complete). So I have just started on the Iliad. I did a couple of Shakespeare plays at school but apart from that I haven’t read any of these. This should keep me occupied for the next 10 years or so!

This is similar to me. Doing Spanish for the first time in years, so relearning it. We are in a modern history/ government/ economics year. We're covering a lit of these types of topics.

And out of necessity- how to figure GPAs and file mid year reports. Not for fun.

I did all of AoPS Intro to Algebra and Geometry with my youngest over 3 years. It felt amazing to solve those problems. 

Right now I'm up to my eyeballs in courses related to launching a business as an Independent Educational Consultant, aka college admissions advisor. I'm in my last term for a graduate certificate in Independent Educational Consulting with a practicum class and a marketing class.  I'm also doing a local program for military spouse business owners. 

It's a bit of a firehose. I have 50 pages on marketing to read this afternoon. Definitely a new area for me.

Older kid is dual-enrolled full time (plus Leven AP Spanish).  That means I only have my younger kid to deal with, and it suddenly seems like I have so much more time! 

I'm actually making progress with my Spanish, and I'm starting to learn Python.  I'll be doing AoPS Intro Algebra alongside my younger one.  And for fun I'm taking a world architecture class at the community college on one of the evenings my older one (no driver's license yet) has an evening class.

Because I have two boys doing Algebra 2 (at different chapters/concepts in different books), I''m slogging through Algebra 2 on my evenings and weekends.   I can factor like a boss, radicals and I are on speaking terms, but advanced graphing and functions just isn't my cuppa.  At all.  

Onward and upward anyway. 

Just please don't ask me to graph that onward and upward.  ;)  

I'm also messing around with some political science reading because I like it and because oldest is doing an American Govt course with me and he likes to read, read, and talk.  So, I get to read, read, and talk too.  That's the nice part of homeshooling for me. :) 

And I'm finishing grade averages to update oldest son's transcript for that college application he was supposed to have sent in 2 weeks ago…  I hope they are happy with just the transcript and don't ask me for course descriptions.   I haven't updated those yet.
