saraha Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 My daughters' girl scout troop is planning a trip to New Orleans in June. They are all high schoolers. They would like to stay in a place that is walkable to sight seeing things and are open to Airbnb, VRBO and hotels. They have taken a few trips together before but have always stayed in hotels. They are obviously not into partying, definitely more of a museum, history, experience type of crowd. Specifically they want to eat some authentic New Orleans food, want to do a good walking ghost tour and want a clean safe place to stay. We would really appreciate any recommendations you all have! katilac Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 What do they consider walkable? Remember, it's going to be really hot here in summer, lol. Walkable will also be expensive. If they could possibly schedule August instead, the hotel deals are about the best then, and there are also lots of price fixee deals at restaurants (including some famous and well-regarded ones). It's true that the weather is even worse in July and August, but really it's already plenty hot and muggy in June, I'm not sure the difference is notable 😅 Take a look at some New Orleans neighborhoods and what's in them and near them. The most likely for walking to lots of attractions would probably be Arts/Warehouse District, Central Business District, and French Quarter. The French Quarter is not all party places by any means. I'd pick the one that has the best deals along with the closest and most-wanted attractions. Check the WALKING directions from possible hotels to various attractions. It's usually super quick to grab an Uber as well. Check hotels on Tripadvisor and such. Double-check important amenities; not every city hotel will have all typical amenities, and sometimes they do but not what you expect (like sometimes they have a pool but a really small one). I can't really speak to Airbnb and VRBO, other than guessing that they're going to be a bit harder to research and some have none-standard rules and policies. 1 Quote

katilac Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 23 minutes ago, Seasider too said: Not sure where you're coming from, but August in NOLA is something that requires acclimation by those from non-humid climates. And July and even June can have challenging days. So think hard about what low season travel savings are worth to you. If the girls don’t mind heat and sweat akin to a tropical climate, it’s likely to be less crowded. Just know light clothing and water bottles are necessities. Gulf coast people are used to it but NOLA has all the heat and humidity of the swamp without the sea breeze. There's only about a 2-degree difference in the high/low averages of June vs August; 90/74 vs 92/76. June and July are full of challenging days, lol. They are more likely to have pleasant-by-comparison days than August, but they are really sporadic and random. The heat and humidity are pretty much a constant in any summer month. The lows in April and October go down to about 61, but the highs are still at about 80. They're just going to be really sweaty no matter which month they choose. We have lots of cool stuff, though! 1 Quote
