A long time ago, on this forum I think, someone posted a link to a blog post or article online. It talked about spelling and comparing it to a sandwich, kind of. If I remember right, consonants in CVC words were compared to bread and the vowel was a sandwich filling. Later on it went on to CVCe words and continued the analogy with cake, if I remember right.

I remember thinking that could be helpful for one of mine when the time is right. Well, I think that time is now. And of course, I can't find the thread or a link or a bookmark for it. My google skills are failing me (probably because my memory is so vague). So if anyone has any idea what blog/article/curriculum does this, can you point me in the right direction?

Ha-ha you are a visual learner, and remember the visual details of things. Me too. 😉

I'm betting you're referring to materials from Stevenson Learning, which use mnemonic pictures to aid struggling readers and writers? We used the Basic Blue Spelling Manual (the only item from Stevenson Learning that we used), and it was one of the things that finally (in 6th grade), helped our struggling speller/writer even begin to click.

I used that manual and expanded it/individualized it, so that we were doing the little visual picture/stories about 3x/week on the white board, as well as doing dictation 1-2x/week towards the end of the week, as DS was getting familiar with the words. I'm linking you to a recent post in the thread "Doing Megawords with a terrible speller" where I listed what we did for spelling for our struggling speller.

OMG! A winner on the first try! The Hive comes through again.
I am excited to look more at that when I have more time later.
