Quercus Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 I was talking to someone last week who said that when she first moved out she only had one burner, so she'd often end up making these mixed meals where something was boiled in the bottom pot while vegetables steamed in the top. I would love to have something like that, but all my searches bring up are steaming bowls that sit inside of a pot and microwave or instapot accessories. Does anyone have any idea what those pots are called? It's a whole pot of boiling food in the bottom an apparatus to steam vegetables on top of that. Quote
Miss Tick Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 Sounds like a standard steamer, like a double-boiler with a stranger insert. We happen to have two different sizes. Normally I just put enough water in the bottom pan to stream whatever is in the top, bit I suppose you could put more water in and then boil something at the same time. Here's an example. Quote
wintermom Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 You can get a metal insert/tray for a pot you already have, you can get a bamboo steamer to place in a wok, or you can get something like this: https://www.amazon.ca/Norpro-1-Quart-Stainless-3-Piece-Steamer/dp/B000SSSVGY/ref=asc_df_B000SSSVGY/?tag=googleshopc0c-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=293019361904&hvpos=1o5&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8710962854947005017&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9000685&hvtargid=pla-348987730253&psc=1 Quote
Quercus Posted December 30, 2019 Author Posted December 30, 2019 Thank you both! Now I know what to look for. My aunt bought an instapot from my computer and I think it messed up my search results. Quote
domestic_engineer Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 or search for a multipot or pasta pot. here's what popped into my mind after reading your description:: https://www.amazon.com/Cooks-Standard-Classic-Multipots-Stainless/dp/B078MWB6DX/ref=sr_1_14?keywords=multipot&qid=1577730452&sr=8-14 1 Quote
Amy in NH Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 We have one of these Revere Steamer insert thingies that sit on top of a regular saucepan. Quote
Arcadia Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 IKEA pot with stabil steamer insert. I bought two inserts since I steam gyoza in one and Chinese buns in the other. You can cook rice using the bottom pot. This is the IKEA pot I prefer https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/ikea-365-pot-with-lid-stainless-steel-glass-10256750/ This IKEA pot can be use with the steamer insert as well https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/oumbaerlig-pot-with-lid-90286423/ stabil insert https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/stabil-steamer-insert-stainless-steel-30152346/ Quote

KungFuPanda Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 If you buy a full set of pots and pans, a steamer pot is often one of the pieces. Quote

Just don't be like (a much younger and more stupid) me and get rid of it because you don't know what it is. I'm searching my cabinets for something to steam dumplings in tomorrow night...and realizing that I likely donated it years ago. (I KNOW I had one...thinking maybe I thought it was for draining noodles...)🙄 1 Quote
KungFuPanda Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 Don't forget about your rice cooker if you have one. I'm assuming most came with a steamer rack? Quote
