Mitch23 Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 Hello, Requesting for your feedback. I am a homeschool, single and work-from-home mom and my daughter is requesting for an E-Reader, since she loves reading. According to this link, https://thewiredshopper.com/e-readers-vs-tablets/?fbclid=IwAR2gAE2cU3h5ecaA6IjXQnLY9Q5ix0mOOJZ355FBBHCPO5SBniJ_pi5E9sk, you can also read ebooks through a tablet, which I wasn't aware, but according here it appears like it's a norm that people read through tablets. I like the idea and I like to get her a tablet instead since she can use it to for her homeschooling. Currently she's using my laptop. I just work after she's finished with it. So it's like double whammy, she gets a laptop alternative and E-reader in one buy. What I like best is it's cheaper than a laptop too. But my main concern is, wouldn't tablets strain my daughter's eyes? At the same time, I was thinking, she might also get distracted that instead of reading her usual adventure stories, she now goes to social media? I know you can limit or guard the websites your children are looking at? Does that work for tablets too? I'm sorry for having too many questions, but your thoughts are appreciated. Thank you. Sincerely, Mitch Quote
Quercus Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 E-ink readers are much easier on the eyes, even the ones with backlighting (kindle paperwhite). If you do get a tablet primarily for reading, you can change the background to off-white and install a red light app to soften the glare. You will not be able to read a tablet in full sunlight, but an e-reader should be fine. There are parental controls available for tablets, yes. Of course, with an e-reader, they are unnecessary. You can read ebooks on any device that accesses the internet. Having a device devoted to books, however, is convenient and comes without any of the concerns you listed in your post. 1 Quote
Mitch23 Posted December 27, 2019 Author Posted December 27, 2019 Oh I didn't realize that we can change the background to off-white and install a red light app to soften the glare. Thank you so much for your input. I appreciate it. 1 Quote
vonfirmath Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 I have a tablet and a ereader. It is worth it to me not to have to read a book on the tablet! I much prefer reading on the Kindle ereader screen than the app on my phone or my tablet. If the main use is to read black and white books, I'd get a ereader. If the main use is going to be other schoolwork, you probably want a tablet. If you'll be doing both a lot you may well want both. Quote
