TravelingChris Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 What a powerful movie. I will probably see it again because my two kids who do not remember the whole incident (one was going to be born less than 6 months later and second was only 3) want ot see it and unfortunately, due to my failing body, I had to leave at a crucial point even though I was able to return. And how much worse is the media today--- those poor kids on the mall, the guy who collected all that money for Des Moines Children's Hospital, and so many countless others. Where do all these people go to get their reputations back? 4 Quote
Robin M Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 We haven't seen the movie but John and I who are night owls were watching the broadcast and saw the whole thing unfold on television and I think it was like 2:00 in the morning our time. They were interviewing witnesses on air when suddenly the screen went to snow and a couple minutes later, the picture comes back with I think Dan Rather or Tom Brokaw, I can't remember which, but a major news reporter who took over and at that point, that's when it all went bad for Jewell. Poor guy got dragged through the proverbial mud. 2 Quote
EmseB Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 I haven't seen the movie, but I read what happened to Richard Jewell some years back. It was unbelievably horrible. And the news cycle has only ramped up in intensity since then and no one seems to have learned anything. IDK if the movie is accurate or not, but I have a hard time figuring how the FBI and media could have possibly been made to look worse than what they actually did. 3 Quote

Where do all these people go to get their reputations back? You can't ever get it back. The only thing people remember is the initial bad story which our culture seems to thrive on. I read about retractions put on back pages, etc. I think once the info is out there, it's too late. 1 1 Quote
Garga Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 (edited) I watched it and came home to give my boys yet another speech about “DO NOT TALK TO LAW ENFORCEMENT WITHOUT A LAWYER PRESENT EVER, EVER, EVER!!!” I’ve heard about sneaky tactics law enforcement will use to try to get you to give up your rights and there was a scene in this movie where they tried to get Richard Jewel to give up rights by pretending they were “play acting” having him waive his rights. In the movie, his lawyer pointed out that *any* lie you tell is a federal offense, so even if you accidentally get a date wrong, for example, when you’re talking to them, they can say, “AHA! It wasn’t the 13th of October! It was the 12th! You just lied to us!” And you can prosecuted and jailed for lying. I’d already heard about that, so I included that in part of my speech to my boys. Never say a single word without a lawyer present, no matter what. Because they’re just as happy to jail you on a technicality as on the real crime if they’re convinced you’re guilty. I think it was here at the hive that I started learning how serious it is not to talk without a lawyer present ever, ever, ever. Here’s just one of a billion websites about not talking to police: https://www.cheatsheet.com/culture/real-reasons-you-should-never-talk-to-the-police-without-a-lawyer-even-if-you-are-innocent.html/ Edited December 27, 2019 by Garga 3 Quote
Garga Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 I liked the movie, and whenever I see a movie like that I do like to go back and see how accurate it was. Here’s an article comparing Fact vs Fiction in the movie: https://slate.com/culture/2019/12/richard-jewell-movie-accuracy-journalist-fact-fiction.html 2 Quote
