I just use my dinner knife for small fruits if they need to be cut. I use my santoku knife for pineapples, watermelons and papayas. My kids are to bring fruit knives for their Saturday school potluck to help in the making of their class contribution of fruit salad. Their classmates are bringing some of the fruits.

Given this list of fruits, apples, grapes, strawberries/mixed berries, oranges, bananas, lemons, what knives would you recommend I bring to their classroom? I can buy new fruit knives if they would be better since I can always use them after. Youngest kid in that class is in middle school.

I have apples at home that I could cut on Friday night. How many lemons do I need to squeeze to prevent browning if I cut up three normal size apples and put in a Rubbermaid container?

I didn't know there WAS such a thing as a fruit knife!  If it were my kids, I'd send a paring knife and my apple-slicer-thingy that cores it and cuts it into sections.

The internet tells me it's possible to cut up an into sections, then secure it in its original shape with a rubber band and that will prevent browning.  I haven't tried this in real life yet.

We tried that and it didn’t work. We even cling wrap the cut apple.

No, this is a great job for that bottled lemon juice with the sprinkle top.

I use the squeezed lemons as fridge fresheners for a few days. I’ll probably go for the bottled lemon juice this time as I have a sponge cake to bake as parent contribution.

Just curious....how are the kids taking the knives to school?  Is this a home school program or regular school? It would be really odd to send a kid to school with a knife in these times.

That’s what I was thinking!  A senior was a expelled for having a butter knife in his car a few years ago in a school district by us because it was considered a weapon.  (It was found during a dog drug check- dog flagged the car has having drugs, all police found was the butter knife the boy kept on the car because he worked at a bagel shop and ate in his car during breaks).

It’s Saturday German School. My kids and their classmates had brought fruit knives and cake knives for end of year potlucks in December and May for the past few years. I have supplied mixing bowls and serving bowls in the past and this is the first time my kids were volunteered for bringing the fruit knives.

I have no idea there is such a thing. I prefer French midsize knives for almost everything. Japanese knives are too small for me, I need some heft 😂 But I’m not sending those to any school, nuh huh. You’d have to pry them off my cold hands.
