Scarlett Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 We spent the first night in our new house last Thursday. Dh went back to work Monday (he had neck surgery weeks ago) but things were slow and he had so much left to move in the shop that he took Tuesday and Wednesday off to finish up. We have to pay someone to haul off a bunch of construction bags full of trash (yes he actually threw a bunch of stuff away). But other than that I think we are moved! Whooooo HOOOOOO. I never want to move again. And Oh how I hope I can convince dh to not accumulate more junk. We are both back to our jobs today (well, I worked yesterday also). For much needed rest. 😉 The new house, although fully painted and new flooring etc is a total disaster. We will just have to slowly start putting things away and organizing. Thankfully I got the new kitchen completely cleaned and all new white shelf paper installed everywhere so I was able to put the kitchen together quickly in the first day there. We still have 2 big pieces of furniture to get into the house....one of which I am not sure will fit. It is my computer armoire....and there is not really a spot for it...I am thinking of giving it up. I use my PC so rarely.....it is just a big touch screen all in one, so no big tower....but there is a printer that I use. So hmmm....anyone have a small desk set up they like? I do need some sort of filing cabinet too. So I don't know about that. This house is almost 100 sf bigger but somehow I don't have room for that piece of furniture. Weird. 8 Quote

The way the house is set up/the amount of wall vs floor space can affect having room to fit things. 1 Quote

Yes, I guess that is it. This house is much more traditional....a ranch I guess with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths down one side of the house and living, dining and kitchen on the other end. The old house had 2 small bedrooms and 2 small baths down stairs and one huge 400 sf bedroom upstairs. There were two living areas and I had the computer armoire in one of those areas. Quote
school17777 Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 Congratulations on your move! Enjoy your new home. I’d go ahead and give up the pc desk for a fresh start. Quote
wintermom Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 That must be a HUGE relief! Enjoy your new digs. I second IKEA for desks. They even have tables for other "purposes" that can be used as a desk. Their bedroom tables make great tiny desks. Or you can go with a board and supports, with drawers (or not) underneath. Quote
Scarlett Posted December 5, 2019 Author Posted December 5, 2019 The thing is the armoire footprint isn't any bigger than a small desk.....and it holds a lot of stuff. I think I am going to try to make it work somehow....In the guest room I was going to put a bed, nightstand and small armoire set....maybe I will put that small armoire in dss's room and the computer armoire in the guest room. Scarlett Posted December 6, 2019 Author Posted December 6, 2019 So we sold our house--closing was this morning. Haven't closed yet on the new house. Hope to do that next week. Dh made a deal with our former neighbor to clean up the rest of the trash in exchange for a trailer and some tractor implements. Sooooo excited by that...both because it means dh won't continue killing himself and because we get rid of a few things we don't need. 2 Quote

And isn’t it weird how space chopped up different can completely change how it lives and what fits? We hit the same thing with our rental here in Ohio vs the temp home we bought, where they were the exact same square footage but one lived and felt so much bigger and more functional than the other. It is so weird. The old house had a really open living area, but the 2 bedrooms down stairs (including the master) were very small. New house has much bigger bedrooms (master is 17 X 13 which I love) but the living space is not as open. The kitchen is closed off from the living room which I do not love. But the kitchen in new house is not a gut job and I do love that. 🙂 So I guess we can't have everything. Overall I am very happy. Dh is 40 minutes to work now instead of 55....and I am 4 minutes away. Quote

I wish we could have closed on new house today also, but I guess it doesn't matter since we are moved in. The seller has already pre signed because she had plans to be out of town this week. So it should be a simple deal. Things are hung up on the appraisal....I don't really understand it....well, the bank won't explain it to me...but something about the comps. I am thinking it has less to do with the actual value of our new house and more to do with how the market in the town is being valued.....for future cover their rear situations maybe. I really don't know what the hold up is. Quote

You know it’s a done deal but you probably can’t really relax until it’s official. 1 Quote

That’s what kept us from being able to refi two years ago. No comps for similar properties. Homes on acreage, townhomes, houses on the water— things like that have a more difficult time with comps usually than standard cookie cutter neighborhood homes. Hope it works out! how’d you get to sleep there if you haven’t closed? The seller gave us the keys as soon as we signed the contract and told us she was fine with immediate possession. I mean, I see her point.....she was days away from the bank taking it away from her so what did she care. It also enabled us to do the work before we moved in which was SUCH a big deal to me. This seller has been a dream to work with. She was determined that God wanted us to have this house. She is super sweet. And the buyers have turned out ok, after their initial flake out earlier this summer over $1000 in closing costs. We didn't let them move in before closing but we did let them store a few things there earlier this week. We ended up leaving some building materials for them.....doors and quickcrete (for like setting fence posts) and some new privacy fencing that needs put up....and a bunch of other stuff they can use. A queen headboard/footboard/rails..... No realtors. Just us and the buyers and sellers working it all out. Closed here in my office this morning. And will probably close on new house here next week too. Quote

Letting someone take possession before legal signing can be one of the biggest nightmares on earth. Well, the bank had no say since she was not technically in foreclosure and she doesn't care. LOL. But she also trusts us. We do have a mutual friend, so I guess there is that. It was a win win for us all because she got a little cash she wouldn't have other wise and also, I think she was able to move into her own very nice apartment once her husband died because he was 100% disable vet and she would be eligible for a widows pension. She had been living with her son for the last 2 years. Quote
