smileyme
7'th grader gets A on Viola but wants to be at the advanced levels. Most of her peers have tutors, I cannot afford one currently. She practices for 1-2 hours a day. Wanted to get suggestions on how she can get to advanced levels by self learning? She was told by her school music teacher that she is good enough, but the higher classes are currently full and have no slot. Suggested she keep practicing and she may be moved up next year. She moved in from another middle school. So she is looking for some good content, to improve on her own. Pen
There was some excellent low cost online music training I heard about. Can’t recall details but was associated with someplace like Juliard or Curtis Institute with goal of making music more affordable/accessible to kids. catz
I assume she is doing a school program right now. Could you afford maybe a monthly lesson? It's hard to get to an advanced level without some hands on help especially if she is thinking of pursuing music at a college level. I think that's really hard to know at this age though. Practicing 1-2 hours a day independently is amazing at this age though. I have an advancing violinist. Might any of your local music programs offer scholarships or financial aid? Could you ask the director of her program for low cost suggestions?
gardenmom5
form matters so much, and kids studying on their own can have a hard time with that. if you can find an online one, that's better than completely on her own. youtube has viola instruction online - I'm sure you'd have to wade through what's good, vs a waste of time. good luck. Pen
You aren’t in Seattle area by any chance? I know a viola / violin teacher there who might be able to help with ideas if not lessons.
Chris in VA
I will ask my daughter. She went thru the public school system, starting viola in 5th grade, and didn't have lessons other than class orchestra there until the end of her Jr year. She improved enough to audition for college and made it in everywhere she applied. Not to brag, just saying lessons can really, really help. Even if you could do a short series, it would really be beneficial.
Chris in VA
Ok so dd says there are lots of resources. She recommended this site: sightreadingfactory.com and also mentioned Galamian books. She said (private, live) lessons by video are way cheaper and can be helpful.
Pen
https://www.juilliard.edu/news/121786/juilliard-launches-six-free-online-courses-collaboration-edxorg doesn’t have viola but could be worth doing what it does have ?
May
I do t know where you live but if you are close to an university that has a music program, lessons may be offered by students in the program. We live near GMU and the cost of lessons vary depending on if you choose an undergrad, graduate or PhD student. I agree with GardenMom5, form matters so much. Our daughter took violin lessons for 12 years and 1 year of viola. I’m impressed with the amount of practice😊
