prairiewindmomma
I learned a thing today. Some states have mechanisms for appointing special education surrogate parents. Students are generally eligible for a surrogate educational parent when they have no parent (or foster parent) who can be identified. Many of these are homeless teens. A surrogate parent sits in IEP meetings and acts as a parent advocate for the child. Many of us on this board have learned a lot about identifying and advocating for children. Some of us have had our own kids qualify for IEPs and 504s. It is a learning curve. It is often a battle. If you're sitting around, wondering what to do with all of the skillz and knowledge you've developed 🤩 or if you have a special heart for kids with learning challenges, know that this is a volunteer opportunity in many (maybe most or all?!!) states. The relevant google fu search phrase seems to be "special education surrogate parent + name of your state).
