chocolate-chip chooky
My 13 yr old has her first ever SAT exam tomorrow, Oct 5th. Any last minute words of wisdom from the experienced? I should add that this is not only her first ever SAT; it's her first ever exam of any kind.
gstharr
my only 11th hour advice is to arrive at the site at least 1/2 hour early. plenty of time to settle in and calm down. good luck to her. 2

Roadrunner
She should know they will spend 45 minutes on instructions before the test. That way she isn’t overly frustrated by how long it’s taking them to get to the test. 1

chocolate-chip chooky
Can any of you elaborate on the rule of needing to take your ticket and ID with you when you leave the test room in breaks? We're trying to figure out what you then do with those when you're dashing to the toilet 🤔 Do you take a bag with you? Shove them in a pocket? Wedge them under your bra strap? I'm expecting they won't be allowed access to bags in the breaks, but really, what do I know? We're absolute newbies to this. There are only 10 test takers at this testing site tomorrow, so I'm wondering if some of this may be a bit more lenient. We'll see.

My kids use a ziplock binder pocket, something like the link. However any transparent ziplock would work. My kids would love to shove them in a pocket but their passports were kind of hard to shove into a pants or jeans pocket. Maybe cargo pants pocket or jacket pocket would work. Also bring a cardigan or a jacket with her. If she doesn’t need it she can always put it aside. If the air conditioning in the room is too cold, she can put the cardigan/jacket on easily. https://www.staples.com/JM-Zipper-Ring-Binder-Pockets-6-x-9-1-2/product_497930 1

She said that was distracting but bearable. Big thank yous to everyone for your help and for being so supportive.

Runningmom80
My DS just took his today! He didn't finish a lot of sections so we'll see how that works out. I'm just proud of him for doing it. It was his first test ever too. I realized that maybe a lower stakes test might have been a better option but he felt like it went well so I guess I haven't traumatized him!

...................
Bring a heavy hoodie or jacket depending on your climate! At the high school my son took it at, they let the students find their names and enter the classrooms (many high schools around here don't have hallways the classrooms open right out into the world and usually there are overhanging walkways for rain)... But the one my daughter took it at did not let them go in. They made them wait like cattle and it was an uncharacteristic-for-CA cold March morning 43 degrees, and after waiting in the cold 40 minutes (mind you none of these kids had proper warm clothing because it warms up to 70 by 11am and our kids tend to forget to bring warm clothes for these types of things, assuming they'll just go inside)... they herded them all like cattle at the last second yelling at them in a large crowd and gesturing. My daughter's feet and hands were numb and she was freezing by the time she got in the room which was not pre-heated. Also, we have "micro climates" here and I forgot the little town her high school was in has a CRAZY morning fog every morning. 🙂 SO just remember they may treat students like cattle before and during the exam. THey also didn't have a place for her to use the bathroom before she got to the room. Edited October 20, 2019 by Calming Tea

There were only 10 test-takers, so the herding was very gentle 🙂 Also, the invigilator took the time to introduce himself to each test-taker in the half-hour before he opened the door. It was all so friendly and calm. AND there were toilets 👍 Your daughter's experience doesn't sound conducive to optimal test-taking 😕

Her next test is at the high school my son used and they are so lovely. They let him take AP exams there and the proctor was adorable, a lady in her 60's who brought her "puppy in a purse" so kids could pet the puppy to relieve test anxiety!! My ds is allergic so he did not pet the puppy but it made him so happy to see it there, he admitted.....AND she gave each kid a Toblerado candy bar to have afterward which miraculously is one of the few my son can eat with his allergies. So sweet.

daijobu
We had a similar test taking situation with temperature. It was winter, but to save money the school doesn't turn on HVAC on the weekends, even for test takers. The students who attended the school had the heads up and brought warm drinks, but we had no idea. And this was on top of that, that they turned me away at the door, even though my dd wasn't in high school. (She was taking SAT for talent search.) And THEN as I was driving away, they nearly turned away her and a bunch of other underage students because they didn't have IDs. (IDs aren't required for younger test takers, but it took some convincing by these youngsters before they were allowed to test.) I had no idea what was happening, that these young kids needed to stand up for themselves and about the cold, until pick up. Needless to say we didn't return to that high school.
