Accountability Thread 9/1-9/7

Recommended Posts

First week of September. I'm hopeful that September will be a good month because August was terrible.

To do today: deal with the aftermath of being gone from the house for three days. I'm still finding things that didn't get done that should have been done two days ago. Aggravating. I need to check schoolwork and get the schedules done for the four day week. I need to enter a few more things in the county fair. I need to write today and work on character stuff. Trouble is, I am so tired I slept from 8 to 8 last night, and I just want to go take a morning nap instead of catching up.

@Critterfixer: wishing you a good September.  And: thank you so much for the Accountability thread.

Today:

  • plan day, plan week (including picking up with history), plan a general week to include lessons, plan a general day; groceries & a trip to the library
  • execute school for the day: essentials are science, art, languages, math; kudos for composition & English.
  • plan week
  • figure out music enrichment
  • adjust elder DS' exercise
  • exercise
  • e-mail some character information to our DM ("dungeon master") for Monday's RPG; brainstorm a kind but effective way to engage some of the sexism inherent in the particular RPG that's being run
  • pray.

Morning!

DH took DD10 out fishing again this morning.  They aren't back yet, but he hasn't sent any pics of her with any fish so I dunno if she has caught anything or not.  DH told her that they were going to get up at 6:30, but forgot....until DD10 was in our bedroom at 7:05 saying "daddy, are we still going fishing?"  Lol.  Never ever will my 10yr old ever walk into our bedroom at 7:05 and say "mommy are we still doing school today?" lol

So far this morning, I have cleaned up my kitchen and cleaned out my fridge.  Threw a lot of produce away.  Doh!  I try so hard to not overbuy....and I still overbuy.  Ok, well, actually part of what happens.....I buy some things that need to be cut, and then I never cut them.  And there's no way anyone else in this house who eats cucumbers will ever actually slice the cucumber themselves.  🙄  But sometimes I do still overbuy.  I pitched out several zukes that I bought with no plan in mind.  Also mushrooms that I had used part of the larger container, when really I should have just bought the bulk mushrooms getting only exactly what I needed.

Anyway, here's today's plan:

*Organize the last of the school crap.  The piles have been kicked around a bit so there's some reorganizing of the preorganizing lol.

*Get the kids going on their chores (still have to get DS6 out of bed and fed lol)

*Get school plans finished after all the last of the organizing is done

*Finish planning out the week so that I can make sure to get all the stuff done that I want to get done, like having time to sew, keep the kitchen clean, and I need to correct the state taxes

*clean out my pantry like I cleaned out my fridge.  There's not much in there that needs to be pitched, but there are some things that need to be sorted and such

*sort some fabric

*maybe actually sew today.

Morning. DH took the boys to the in-laws. I think they are going to fish and probably do some work around there. I'm staying home and writing, catching up on school stuff, and general stuff like that. Must resist the urge to lie down and take a nap. I still haven't recovered completely from last week.

Stupid damn printer!

I went to print out the kids new chore charts for the week and once again, my computer keeps telling me the printer is offline....even though it's very clearly not.

So I unplug the printer, plug it back in, try again.  No go.  I restart my laptop, no go.  I unplug the printer, then shut down the computer, then plug the printer back in then turn the computer back on, no go.  So I decided to remove the printer and then add it back.  Remove it, and the computer can't find the printer.  So I go back, disconnect it from the router, then reconnect it, it says it connected to the wireless router just fine, the computer STILL can't find it!   It keeps finding someone's HP "envy" photo printer, but not the one sitting in our house.  *sigh*  Thinking maybe it's my computer, I try to print something from my phone, my phone can't find the damn thing either!

I have wasted over an hour dealing with this, but until it's fixed we can't print anything.  *sigh*  I *HATE* dealing with IT problems.

Still can't figure out the computer thing but got into the school office stuff.

Going overboard.

I need to move book cases.  I have all my piles in front of the book cases.  *sigh*

Taking a break.

I do this, too!

Today is really hitting!  more on our plans later, I hope; for now, getting going with languages & basics, help elder DS with tummy issues, keep house going okay.  Celebrate DH who is home today for the last day of his vacation.

OK, progress is being made!

Bookcases are all moved.  My pile of *books* (texts, teaching idea books etc) are all put in the bookcase they belong in.  They aren't sorted by subject yet (which I want to do) but they are in the case and out of the way.  Piles are getting smaller.  School/office desk is all cleaned out, and the printer stand/cart (old microwave cart) is all cleared out.  All types of printer paper are in the drawer directly under the printer.  I plan to put other types of paper into the open space under that drawer.  Then, I think that in the cabinet space on the bottom of that, all the supply items like folders, binders, dividers, that sort of stuff.  Then the last basket of stuff to sort will be the over flowing basket of teaching aids, like place value strips, letter tiles, etc.  I think I am going to sort those by subject and place each subject in a cubicle drawer under each of the kids cubbies.

Ok, break over.  Keep the momentum going!

So, a giant pile of crap fell out of a binder I was moving.  It was from college 20+ years ago.  Graded lesson plans, lesson plan evaluations, papers from classes from 20 yrs ago..

OMG, it really is all just a bunch of crap.  I knew college really was a bunch of BS.....but really.....SO MUCH BS in this binder of crap.

I am losing momentum.

I pitched so much BS crap from 20 yrs ago.

All binders and folders and so on are all in the bottom cabinet part of the printer cart.

All notebooks and specialty (non printer) paper is in the open space above the cabinet.

The few actual teaching resources from what I saved from college are all in a binder (like unit study stuff) and in the book case with the text books and such.

I have one milk crate of learning resources that still has to be sorted.  I also have one milk crate of stuff to be filed (most completely unrelated to school stuff like DH's birth certificate?!?!?! and our copy of our lease agreement here, vehicle titles etc. I am not even ready to set up the file cabinet, so most of this will probably just get thrown in the drawer.  I have a surplus of regular folders, I might just organize into that instead of trying to set up a "file cabinet."  Anyway......)
I have one other milk crate of random crap that I don't know what to do with yet.

Beyond that, I have a small pile of crap under the desk that I need to sort into these 3 crates or just....put away.

BUT..........dang it, I have other stuff to do.  DH smoked a turkey for dinner.  Which, yay, takes *that* part off my to do list.  But, he only got the smoker going so he didn't do ANY sides.....guess who is now boiling potatoes and going to have to find some other vegetable.  I had in my menu plan for him to do baked taters and zucchini boats on the grill.  Blah.  So I still have to get dinner together.

Also, I *STILL* have to do the actual school planning.

Haven't even started in the sewing room

Still can't figure out what's up with the printer.

Mom's going to be here tomorrow, dining room is a mess and there's toothpaste all over the sink in the bathroom because I haven't been able to direct kids in their chores.

I am running out of hours in the day and running out of energy.

Okay!  Elder DS is working away on his languages, plus he took a math test: for the rest of the day, some English and more foreign language -- we're catching up from last week which had his birthday and a couple days of him feeling very poorly.

Younger DS did his English work, is almost through piano practice, and has a bit of Greek alphabet left to do.  I'm going to try for: Latin vocab review; Anki; body science; and then let him do some Ed Emberly Fingerprint people for art practice.

Forgot to mark down on my big whine....the whole tear down of the actual turkey.  Can DH carve a turkey?  sure!      Ish.  He's ready, willing, and knows how to handle the knife and fork.

However for whatever reason when DH cuts up/tears down the turkey.......we get half the meat.  And the whole reason for smoking a whole 14lb turkey for 4 people to eat (because DD8 isn't here today) is to separate out all the leftover meat into other meals.  These other meals are already planned for, so I *need* the turkey meat.  SO........I had to take down the turkey too.  That's done, the meat is in the meal sized containers and in the freezer, the kids are fed, and the bones and skin and stuff are all ready for overnight stock in the crockpot.

I need to get a load of dishes in very soon, so that I have time for the dishwasher to run and I can get one more load in before bed.

Ok, I am down to 2 milk crates to work through.  One is the "I don't know what to do with it" and the other is the " learning resources" milk crate.

I do have one other milk crate holding past work.  Work books, folders of spelling homework, multiplication drills, etc.  I should probably just throw this away but I can't quite yet.  I also have a milk crate of empty baskets/smaller containers.  But, that's all sorted and "put away.

All the "to file" stuff got shoved in the file drawer lol.

I am breathing SO MUCH dust.

I think I am done for today.  I didn't get it all finished, but I think I am at a good point to plan out the rest of the week.

Happy news: elder DS just finished Writing With Skill 1!  and we're sending in the certificate.  🙂  We got through most of the work I wanted to do; younger DS didn't get to body science, so that'll be up for early AM tomorrow.

I have a thought...

We were supposed to start school 4 weeks ago.  Due to miscalculations, and agreeing to watch the extra kids, we started 2 weeks late.  So we are 2 weeks into our regular school, and have only gotten reading/LA, and math in.  Not much science or social studies but some.  In addition, this time has been just fraught with days off for this that and the other.  Dh taking a day off work.  Labor Day.  DD8 isn't even here until tomorrow after lunch time.  My cousin's shower.  Etc etc etc.

SO, I am thinking....

Maybe instead of a week off.....we JUST do fun science and social studies and extra stuff.  We do homeschool gym and homeschool swim at the rec center.  We do multiple nature walks, draw pictures and watch fun documentaries.  No output or anything necessary, but lots of exposure to interesting stuff.  It can kind of be like a week off with no spelling or Daily Math, but it's not really because it uses the whole week to focus on the stuff that we simply have let slide between all the time off we shouldn't have had.

# did all the things

# ready for bed

planned

sorted

Organized

washed

i went into the kitchen to unload the dishes I posted about earlier.  Glanced st the microwave-10:11

set about the goal to unload and load as fast as possible because I am tired and *really* wanted to nail that so I could actually make breakfast in the morning.

Did it, got it all unloaded and reloaded and wiped down the counters.  Turned out the light and glanced at the microwave- 10:17.

Literally it took 6 minutes.  I *REALLY* have to quit procrastinating this crap. Six small little minutes.

I am going to bed.  I was productive today. I worked hard.  I am gonna sleep before I gotta be *on* tomorrow.

I was a slug yesterday. It was awesome.

Actually, I wasn't a total slug. I got the grading and schedules done, rested, and then helped one of the boys grill dinner, and then went for a drive with DH in the evening. I call that a pretty decent day. Been better with more writing, but can't have everything.

Today's schedule is school and writing. I did my chores, and we don't have any major housework or cooking today. I'm hoping to get about 1,500 words on my novel that is close to complete, and do character work, as well as get a few things done for the writers' meeting tonight.

Morning!

DS6 is done for the day.  DD10 still has math and reading to do but is done with daily math, daily grammar and spelling.

My mom is on her way with DD8 and should be here pretty much any time in the next half hour or so.  So, we are taking a break.  Once mom gets here, I expect we will go out to lunch, then mom will probably leave right after that.  I am thinking we should be able to start finishing up school around 1 or 1:30.  I am not sure how much school will get done with DD8 but I have a list written down for her already and she usually is pretty good about getting work done, so we will see.

I had marked down for us to do an afternoon field trip but I didn't plan for the timing of mom's visit.  So I don't think we are going to do that today.  Maybe Thursday.  The place is only open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.  Girls have a GS meeting on Saturday.

BUT, really, it's a social studies trip, it's a good thing to toss into that "week off."

Morning!

We are up and at 'em.  Today:

Younger DS: do body science, art/craft stuff, and some independent reading fairly early.  Then math, English, language/s, fingerprint drawings, an AO reading and drop into SoTW if we have time.

Elder DS: we're on a cycle of "Pomodoro"s -- work 25", take 5" break, repeat -- that is: Greek; Latin; other subject; first "other subject" will be literature; then art; then science.  Still catching up after his sick days & he has an assignment due this evening; we'll have to work around his tummy troubles but it seems like today may be okay on that front.  Toss piano practice in around the edges.

Me: align the day with our broader goals; focus on school during school; house; outside chores; exercise; dinner &c; planning (plan for lessons/prep for them; update our term goals to include wrapping up the middle ages;

ETA: I'm futzing with the above as I go over our term goals.

Ok, so mom had to leave earlier than she thought, no going to lunch.  The kids ate lunch here....DS6 had some chicken nuggets and randomly decided he wanted to try a strawberry.  He ended up eating about half of it!  DD8 had brought some leftover spaghetti from her birthday dinner with mom and dad, so she had some of that and then she also had leftover chips, so she had some of that too.  Plus a banana.  DD10 polished off the rest of the spaghetti that DD8 didn't want.

Right now, DS6 is outside playing, DD8 is working on Daily Math and DD10 is working on MIF.  The memorization we worked on with the multiplication tables really has helped even though she doesn't have them completely memorized.  We are working on simplifying fractions and it's going SO MUCH FASTER>

If DD10 finishes this math and DD8 gets though the daily math and daily grammar, I will call it good for the day.  Not everything on our list, but good for a broken up day.  (actually as I was typing, DD10 finished and wants to help DD8 with her math.  I am all for reinforcement through teaching others lol)

I think I am done teaching for the day.

Kids have been outside playing.  DD10 wants to come back in.  I told her if she comes in, she has to clean for 1 hour.  They might actually come in.

They have 1 hour of play room cleaning (seriously, this will still take a million years at this rate, but ok) and then have to do chores (unload dishwasher, make beds etc.)   Then they are free for the day.

I do think I am going to have DD10 cooking with me tonight.  We didn't do her recipe last time she cooked so this is a good time to bring it forward.  I should get the chicken out.

Can we just cancel today?  I am not feeling too hot this morning, I didn't sleep well last night.

I vote cancel, and nap in the afternoon.

I've got a few things to do this morning, but glad I rescheduled some of it for next week. I really am enjoying being mostly home this week. The boys are working on their school stuff, and I just helped the boy on cooking duty get his food ready to make this evening. He grumbled a lot about it today--"I thought I would only have to cook for two weeks!" He wasn't happy when I reminded him that I wasn't going to cook for him for the rest of his life, so he needed to learn.

We got going right 'round 9 this AM, which is whoo-hoo for us!  First school goal accomplished.  They are doing independent stuff while I sketch out the day and eat breakfast.

Happy news: elder DS' tummy continues to improve (on average 😉 ).  This was the first morning I've had to wake him up in months, he's been waking up with stomach cramps each day but today he was still happily in bed at 8:30.  Never thought I'd be glad to have a late-sleeping teenager!!!   and he's tolerating a greater variety of foods.  I sure hope this continues.

Focusing on our term goals, we are finishing up week 2 of 6 in this "Getting Up STEAM" term, in which I want us to wrap up the Middle Ages work and get science and art underway.  Elder DS finished his Middle Ages history well enough last year, but I want him to read in SOTW2 parallel to his little brother so that he has his head around the basic historical situation as we head into more Renaissance/Early Modern.  Everybody's doing some science at the moment; now I'm going to drop in some review of the last several SOTW2 chapters we read before we hit the new stuff.

For today: Everybody: SOTW2 (younger/elder), chapters 25 & 26 read & review; piano.  Elder DS: as much as possible of math, study languages, Greek class, Creative Writer, grammar, spelling, penmanship, history reading, BFSU3 discussion, art, aikido.  Younger DS: English (writing/grammar/spelling/penmanship), AO reading, math, study languages, body science, fingerprint art.  Me: planning time (incl. sketch out a daily schedule), work on house 15-30", exercise while elder at aikido, cook, order somethings we need, catch up with DH who's going out of town Sat.

I crashed again.  Just...blah.

I decided on McDs for lunch. I am hoping this will perk me up and get me ready to go.

I want to get MIF and spelling in for the girls.  Have a couple other things on the list, but if math and spelling get done, I will be happy with my efforts lol

I chose not to finish school in favor of getting chores done.  Which...the kids did the chores, I sat on the couch and directed.

I DID make some homemade ice cream that is setting up in the freezer.  We will see how that goes.  I have been promising DD10 for the last week or so and it was really super easy.  I am that it's really good.

I am making dinner now.  Bacon Cheeseburger pasta.  Though, I am doubling the pasta, using 1.5lbs of beef, doubling the canned tomato soup.  I have made the recipe before, I am still tweaking it to get it how I want.  I might try to sub in our homemade tomato soup for the canned next time I make it.

The kids also need to get showers in today.  They are all stinky lol.  In fact, I might get DS6 started in the shower here shortly.

I am feeling better this morning......sort of.  I slept much better.  And my stomach is not so blah.  Now, I am just worn out....differently than sleeping badly.  That worn out you feel when recovering from being sick.  And although I know the reason for all this crappiness, it was all confirmed this morning.

I did oversleep about a half hour, so we are running about a half hour behind.  DS6 is still asleep, but the girls are up.  Breakfast is supposed to be kiwi muffins this morning, but I think we are having cereal.  I will have to make the muffins tomorrow, I have fresh kiwi to use.

So, anyway

Today, school, then some errands.  I need to buy the kids some new toothbrushes because for some bizzare reason, DS6 cleaned them all with a wipey (when he was supposed to be cleaning the sink.)  Also he needs some more pull ups.  Then chores, have the kids clean the sun room, have them spend an hour cleaning in the playroom, and then cooking dinner with DD8.

DD10 is finished with Daily stuff and taking a break

DD8 is finished with Daily stuff, started on her spelling and then decided she had to go potty so she sat in the bathroom for like 30 minutes.

Today: school, starting with yesterday's list 🙂 ; plan out how I'm going to spread Early Modern & Modern history over our term system; exercise all around; class for elder DS.

A very important, but not especially urgent, priority is to get elder DS just physically stronger: more stamina, more strength, prob. more energy.  I'm thinking it would be ideal to do several shorter physical things each day: a couple of easy, short runs; some very beginning weight training; some body-weight exercises; some ballet-style, some yoga.  There's no point in trying to make it "fun" as he'll hate it just as much but it is harder to make him _do_ "fun" things properly.  ie he will wilt desultorily every.single.time he begins to initiate a movement.  We do better with "I know this isn't pleasant but let's just get it done with" routines.

Morning. Today is a full school day, and I'm handling some negotiations which may or may not go well today. I think extra caffeine and possibly some chocolate is in order. Other than that, we are going to grill for much of the afternoon (burgers at lunch, and ribs for dinner) and I'll make a blueberry cobbler, too. I have character work to do and story to write.

Today hit awkwardly; elder DS up a couple of times in the night with tummy problems &c.  My goals are to hit languages, math, and literature today; we have piano lessons and a library/grocery run after that.

Yesterday I did a good amount of exercise with elder DS.  Goals for today are to repeat that: a couple of runs (still fairly short ones), some weight training, some ballet/yoga work -- at the moment it is all pretty brief, my goal is to work him up to a fairly normal/standard exercise regimen by Thanksgiving.  The sweet fellow is just so weak right now, without much stamina, after the months of being ill.

And for later today: get groceries away fairly neatly, stabilize home so that it is calm for DH when he comes home, exercise for me of some sort, dinner -- not sure if we'll have dinner with my MIL tonight or not.  Ideally prep what I need to do tomorrow, DH is going out of town for a bit starting Sat. PM.

For once, a day at work away from other things actually sounds really nice.

oh yes, my friend.  Being a working mother is _hard_, but everything -- including work away from the house -- has its perks, no?  Thank goodness, else who knows how we'd make it through.

Speaking of: Saturday's goals here are to keep on keeping on.  DH had to leave (for a multi-day trip) several hours early which threw rather a monkey wrench in things.  I'll work to find the perk in that particular situation.  !!!  Meanwhile, for this week, I need goals that will be restorative AND keep us going forward.

I think I'm going to plan for an essentially stripped-back school week, and work through a good deal of Bible stuff during my one-on-one with the boys.  I'd like to get elder "through" the New Testament fairly soon, so that he is set up to do a run through "The Bible and Its Influence" this year.  And neither boy has done any real Bible in months, the church disaster totally disheartened me.

So: today, keep things going; draft a week of essential school with a couple of Bible Pomodoros per child/per day, clean, garden, &c.  Hugs to all y'all, or air kisses, or whatever suits.

Afternoon! (evening?)

I have been going pretty hard most of the day.  I was up some time between 7 and 7:30 and kinda jumped in.  Got the girls up and showered cause they were both pretty smelly and they had a GS meeting today at 10.  My girls can both generally shower on their own, but they still require "management."  As in "OMG, you have been in there for 25 minutes, I told you 10 minutes ago to rinse off and get OUT!"  *sigh*

So anyway, I got them showered, wanted to also take a shower but by the time they were showered and dressed and hair was appropriately done, I didn't have time.  So, GS meeting and I had to stay because it's the first meeting of the year and there's lots of info being given like meeting dates, snack signups, etc etc etc.  So we got home around 11:30.  DH was working on one of the vans and I dropped the girls off, said I was heading out and he was like "wait, grab this for me" and "Oh, can you also grab that over there" and so on.  I think I left around noon.

So then I spent a good 2.5 to 3 hours shopping.

Got back, he needs me to help him with whatever he's doing.  So the kids unload, I help  Then, he needs a tank because he has to drain gas from the gas tank.  We have a 5 gallon gas thing, but the spout is apparently busted.  So I head out and get that while he's working on some other part of it.  This errand takes a half hour because apparently 5 gallon gas jugs are like $20 and I was surprised by that, but when I texted DH to ask, he kept asking more questions, It took like 20+ minutes to figure out which 5 gallon gas jug to buy *sigh*

Get back, he needs more help, we finally get the part in and I am like ok good, because I still have to put groceries away, put a load of dishes in the dishwasher since I didn't get them in before I left, and make dinner.     Blah.

So the dishes are done, the groceries are halfway put away, and now, DH just walked in the door and is like "what time do you think we will be eating?"   Um, I dunno, I am so not there yet lol.

Dh ate a third of a container of peanuts and the last of the breadsticks from yesterday for dinner, and now he's in bed lol.

DD8 grabbed the last of yesterday's pizza and popped it in the microwave....I guess she's having leftover pizza for dinner lol

DS6 only wants nuggets and yogurt for dinner, which is pretty much what he would have had anyway, so as soon as DD8 finishes with the pizza, I will nuke his nuggets.

Which leaves me and DD10.  I will probably give DD10 some hot dogs, because I have them, and then a few other things, like a peach, some yogurt, maybe some sliced cheese, etc.

So, I dunno what I am going to have for dinner lol.

ETA 1:Ok, so DD10 had yogurt, leftover pineapple slices (from a can used the other day when DS6 made ham with pineapple) and a serving of rice.  If she wants more, she can have a peach, some cheese, but I think the this will be good for her.

ETA2: I think I might dig into the freezer drawer and see if I can just whip something up.  I am running out of containers and I know that I have a lot of stuff in the freezer in containers that might very well be able to be used up.
