similar to The Giver -- dystopia/teen characters
- the 3 sequels (Gathering Blue; Messenger, Son) also by Lowry
- House of Stairs (Sleator)
- The Wave (Strasser) -- based on a true event
- The Hunger Games trilogy (Collins)
- Uglies series (Westerfeld)
- The Maze Runner series (Dashner)
- Shadow Children series (Haddix)

darker -- along the lines of 1984, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, Lord of the Flies
- The Book Thief (Zusak) -- hard to classify title, but sort of fits in with all of OP's list
- Flowers for Algernon (Keyes) -- short story
- Day of the Triffids (Wyndham)
- Heart of Darkness (Conrad) -- the film Apocalypse Now was very loosely based on this
- Picture of Dorian Gray (Wilde)
- A Clockwork Orange (Burgess)
- Slaughterhouse 5 (Vonnegut) -- another one that's hard to classify, but it is often grouped with dystopias

similar to A Separate Peace
- Peace Breaks Out (Knowles) -- the sequel
- Peace Like a River (Enger)
- The Chosen; My Name is Asher Lev (Potok)
- A Prayer for Owen Meaney (Irving)
- Catcher in the Rye  (Salinger)
- Never Let Me Go (Ishiguro) -- sort of a cross between A Separate Peace and a dystopia

similar to Lord of the Flies -- the shipwreck aspect
- Robinson Crusoe (Dafoe)
- Island of the Blue Dolphins (O'Dell)
- The Cay (Taylor)

similar to Lord of the Flies -- the dystopic/devolving society aspect
- One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Kesey)
- The Crucible (Miller) -- play
- The Lottery (Jackson) -- short story

very slightly similar to Animal Farm
- The Metamorphosis (Kafka) -- existential novella of a man who wakes up and finds he is now a giant cockroach
- Watership Down (Adams) -- rabbits on a quest to find a new home run into a totalitarian state warren run by a dictator rabbit

very slightly similar to Fahrenheit 451
- short stories by Ray Bradbury (author of Fahrenheit 451)
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (Clarke)

Station Eleven is my favorite surprisingly uplifting dystopian novel. Two of my teens have read and enjoyed it.

That was one thing I was going to mention -- it might be good to include some *lighter* or *uplifting* books to help balance out the *dark* and *depressing* mood and ideas in original poster's list, and in my own suggestions above. Teens can easily spiral down a dark hole without something to provide a truthful and inspiring contrast.

past threads with ideas:
"High school literature suggestions that aren't so dark and depressing"
"Suggestions for meaty but not depressing classics for teenagers"
"High literature which is encouraging"
"s/o Steinbeck thread: I need novels that DON'T have tragic/fatalistic worldview"

Great suggestions ladies!  I also appreciate the "uplifting" ones (because even as I was posting this I was having the same thoughts.)
