Science for a 1st and 7th grader

Recommended Posts

Hello,

My friend is new to homeschooling.  What programs would you recommend to teach science to a 1st and 7th grader?  She would like to teach them simultaneously.

How would you go about doing this?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Tbh, I'd teach the 7th grader and just not worry about science for the 1st grader, other than maybe some science-y read-alouds.

I teach to the older and expect the younger to pay attention. What she gleans she gleans, what goes over her head goes over her head. The first grader will learn things either way.

I wouldn't attempt to teach them together at all.  If she is short on time I think it would be far preferable to get something independent for the 7th grader, skipping the time-consuming demonstrations (aka experiments) and read through the level 2 read-and-find-out science series with the 1st grader.

Echoing what others have said. That is too large an age/ability gap to combine for any subject. Besides books for the 1st grader, Magic Schoolbus, Wild Kratts, and other shows are great! Nancy Larson is a good newbie program.

I personally have not found much for secular science that is do able at home for upper grades. I know others are good at putting their own thing together. I’m not that person. Also, upper science tracks with math so that is something to consider, too. Some ideas for 7th are:

Apologia General Science

BJU Press Life- She can use the DLO and be totally hands off.

Exploration Education

k12 possibly as an Independent. They seem to be taking that option away, though.

Oak Meadow

Masterbooks

Novare Science- Go to the Memoria Press website/forum for this one.

Rainbow Science- 2 yr program

I have kids with this exact age difference.  My advice is not to combine.  Whatever she does will be too easy for the older one and too difficult for the younger one.  She not be doing anyone any favors in this situation, including herself.  It will be much easier to teach them separately.

Much like the others have said, if it were me, I would teach the science to the 7th grade level, then let the 1st grader tag along.  If I felt it was something adaptable, then I would adapt it.

I highly highly highly recommend Layers of Learning. Each unit includes a history, geography, science and arts topic with activities for all ages. So....if the science topic was planets, for example, there would be book suggestions, info and activities to apply to the different ages. One topic = different levels of work.

A short summary of science before or after teaching it at the 7th grader's level that the 1st grader sits in on, plays for rest of time.  What was appropriate science for a 7th grader would have been different for each of mine.
