Coco_Clark
Just curious what most Beast users use after Beast 5. How many continue into AOPS pre-algebra? Or use a different Pre-Algebra? Or go straight into Algebra? What did you do and how did that go?
Coco_Clark
My plan is Jacobs (supplementing with Key to Algebra books as needed)....but as for how it will go no one knows. This is my first Algebra student 😱
SoCal_Bear
I went to Jousting Armadillos and then AOPS PA. We came from SM5 and he only did half of BA5. Then he said he wanted to move on. He went through JA in 6 weeks if I remember correctly. He was about to self-study AOPS PA and got through it in about 7 months. We are now doing Jacobs MHE before we start Jacobs. I am planning to do two passes through Algebra since we aren't in a hurry.
Miss Tick
My ds moved to AOPS PA. He spent a bit more than a year on it. Clearly this wasn't a labor of love, so I switched him to a different algebra program. Still moving a bit slowly despite the change. My younger dd will finish Beast next year, and I expect we will move to AOPS PA and see what happens.
Sarah0000
I'm postponing BA5 just because DS wanted a break from BA but he's now doing SM6 which I heard is like a pre A program?? So I have no idea what he'll do after BA.

I'm also considering two passes through algebra, maybe doing the entire (or first 7) the Keys To Algebra before starting Jacobs... SoCal_Bear
Harold Jacobs wrote another book called Mathematics: A Human Endeavor. He is really enjoying it. Stimulating his brain in thinking about math from a different point of view after doing PA for the past 7 months. I posted the TOC today on another thread and will post it here for you. Some people have used it as part of their pre-algebra. I didn't use it, but if I didn't decide to go AOPS PA. I would have seriously considered doing MM7. Mathematics - A Human Endeavor Table of Contents 1. Mathematical Ways of Thinking - The Path of the Billiard Ball, More Billiard-Ball Mathematics, Inductive Reasoning: Finding and Extending Patterns, The Limitations of Inductive Reasoning, Deductive Reasoning: Mathematical Proof, Number Tricks and Deductive Reasoning 2. Number Sequences - Arithmetic Sequences, Geometric Sequences, The Binary Sequence, The Sequence of Squares, The Sequence of Cubes, Fibonacci Sequence3. Functions and Their Graphs - The Idea of a Function, Descartes and the Coordinate Graph, Functions with Line Graphs, Functions with Parabolic Graphs, More Functions with Curved Graphs, Interpolation and Extrapolation: Guessing Between and Beyond4. Large Numbers and Logarithms - Large Numbers, Scientific Notation, An Introduction to Logarithms, Decimal Logarithms, Logarithms and Scientific Notation, Exponential Functions5. Symmetry and Regular Figures - Symmetry, Regular Polygons, Mathematical Mosaics, Regular Polyhedra, Pyramids and Prisms6. Mathematical Curves - The Circle and the Ellipse, The Parabola, The Hyperbola, The Sine Curve, Spirals, The Cycloid7. Methods of Counting - The Fundamental Counting Principle, Permutations, More on Permutations, Combinations8. The Mathematics of Chance - Probability: The Measure of Chance, Dice Games and Probability, Probabilities of Successive Events, Binomial Probability, Pascal's Triangle, Independent and Dependent Events, The Birthday Problem: Complimentary Events9. Farrar
We didn't have all of Beast when ds did it. But he did some Key to afterward, all of MHE, JA, and then we did Jacob's for Algebra. Key to was a good, light fit for this kid. MHE was also a hit - I adore it. It's brilliant. Jacob's also worked really well. This kid has some issues with language so JA was a huge fail. All the write an explanation of this stuff was a mistake for him. By the end, he HATED it. I think we finished all but the very end, but I shouldn't have tried to stick it out. Jacob's algebra is really gentle. We should have just moved on. I think AoPS pre-A is also a great option. I just knew it wasn't right for this particular kid. Jackie
I had intended to go through Jousting Armadillos before AOPS, but JA was nearly all review, and my kid wasn’t interested in review. We did a few sections that were new or approached things notable differently than Beast, then went directly into AOPS Intro to Algebra. The abrupt change in format definitely didn’t make my kid happy (she’d prefer those Beasts all the way through Calculus, I’m pretty sure!) but the content hasn’t been an issue at all.
craftyerin
I have twins that have been using BA 3rd through now (3/4 of the way through 5th). My son is rocking along in Beast, and I'm leaning toward letting him try AOPS pre-A when he finishes BA5, sometime mid-way through next year. I *just* moved my daughter out of Beast 2 weeks ago. She had gotten to where it was frustrating for her and she needed more direct instruction and more independence. I was having to talk her through too many problems for her liking. She was not having any trouble with the MATH, but with presentation and pre-teen angst. 😉 I moved her to MM6. She's able to skip over some chapters because we've covered the content in BA5 already, and I suspect she'll finish MM6 about the same time her twin finishings BA5. I expect her to do MM7 for pre-A at that point. I guess we'll see how the next few months go, though...

It's not Beast but MM is a strong program imo. It has a good balance of conceptual learning with a lot of algorithm practice and I like the focus on word problems.

Soror
Hmm, let's see, ds like Farrar's sons did not have all of BA released, I honestly can't remember how much of 5 he did. He did it concurrently with RS which worked very well in the younger years but not so great in the upper ones. After BA ds did a hodgepodge. JA, some Keys, bits of CLE for review, then AoPS pre-A and then onto MUS Alg and VideoText Alg. I really think it depends on the kid. I think ds would have well to systematically go through something like CLE(instead we just used it for a bit and moved on) for review to solidify concepts and then kept something like HoE on the side
Noreen Claire
DS10 will be finished with BA5 this June; the plan is to start AoPS Pre-A in September. I have requested Jacobs MHE from the library to check it out, thanks for mentioning it! Edited April 12, 2019 by Noreen Claire
El...
Dd went right from BA5 into AOPS Prealgebra. She's 11, but 6th grade. It scared me, because I really want to make sure she has a positive mentality toward math and thought that it might be too hard and discourage her. It didn't. We do math for a set period of time, no matter how many or few problems get solved. And I made clear that I expect this book to be a stretch and take her more than one school year to complete. I sit with her and coach as needed. She's on the 6th chapter, and she likes it. So I say it's a win! Also, she seems to have bought into the struggle-is-good ideas I've been preaching, and now she and DS 7 preach to each other. He's just started BA2. It's hilarious and awesome to watch.
Condessa
My dd10 is in Beast 5D and in Singapore 5. I know we’re going to do AOPS Pre-Algebra, but I’ve been trying to decide if we should do the CWP and possibly IP from Singapore 6, either before or concurrently with AOPS. I’m running out of time to make up my mind. I wonder if it would be annoyingly easy while doing AOPS, or a nice brain-break. Hm. We were pleasantly surprised when the videos showed up in BA Online the other day. I think those might help the transition into Pre-Algebra and Alcumus, though my kids would also prefer to have the little monsters all the way through. katilac
I have nothing useful to add, I just needed to pop in and say that After Beast sounds like a movie about Belle after she decides to move on from an unhealthy relationship and explore her own ambitions. 1
vaquitita
This will be my first time teaching algebra, but my plan for fall for my son who is finishing up beast 5 now is Singapore 6 using Singapore math live. https://www.singaporemathlive.com I showed him AOPS prealgebra and Singapore 6 (well actually he just knew what it was like from doing Singapore 1-3 when he was younger) and he picked Singapore. shawthorne44
Is Singapore 6 prealgebra? I have a vague recollection that it is arithmetic review for the test that they take.
