Generic English textbook or curriculum?

Recommended Posts

Are there any generic English textbooks for the average English student at the high school level? Something with a unit on poetry, a unit on persuasive writing, a unit that correlates with reading say, Romeo and Juliet, and then writing a literary analysis essay? I'm thinking of a resource that would include basic reading comprehension questions and teach annotation as well as general essay writing formats. I'm looking for more like a bare bones English and definitely not classical style. Does something like that exist?

Maybe Implications of Literature Here's a review.

Or maybe Scott Foresman's America Reads series...  There are many older threads that mention this series; if my computer behaves I'll see if I can track some down for you.

We like and are using the England in Literature book this year. I recommend the series. ETA- How to Mark a Book (Adler): https://laurencelibrary.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/how-to-mark-a-book-ma.pdf

I found a few threads on the Scott Foresman series...

There are more threads; Janice in NJ and Susan C. used to wax eloquent about the series.

Scholars Online uses two of the books (United States in Literature, England in Literature) as part of their courses.

I have used Patterns in Literature, Traditions in Literature, United States in Literature, and am currently using Classics in World Literature.  I could try to answer any questions you might have.
