Shelly in VA
Is anyone familiar with this site/program? Dd found it listed in the CollegeBoard Scholarship Handbook, so it's probably legit, but I am not familiar with it. In general, we have only had our kids apply for scholarships within their university or with organizations that we already know, so I'm not sure how to decide what other scholarships are worth pursuing. I know we should never pay to apply, we shouldn't pursue "guaranteed" scholarship claims, that sort of thing, but beyond that I don't know what to consider. Thank you!
Lanny
I suggested to my DD that in general she should not spend a lot of time applying for individual scholarships. We went thru the list on the CollegeBoard web site, twice. One of the listings there was for ScholarshipAmerica. https://scholarshipamerica.org/ I mention that, because my DD qualified, when she took the PSAT/NMSQT as a "National Hispanic Scholar". The CollegeBoard had ScholarshipAmerica send out the confirmation letter and the certificate to those who were honored. https://scholarshipamerica.org/ So, if one was going to look on 2 Scholarship finders (it is time consuming) I would recommend those two. My DD did participate, in her Sophomore (?) year, in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge. She made her first video and submitted it. That is a huge deal for the Grand Prize Winner. I think it was $250K USD. https://breakthroughjuniorchallenge.org/ I do remember that when my DD was on the ApplyTexas web site https://www.applytexas.org/adappc/gen/c_start.WBX , applying to Texas A&M University, that something popped up and they suggested that she apply for a specific scholarship and she did take the time to write at least one essay for that and to apply for it. Scholarships like that I would apply for. The vast majority of the aid most students get, if not 100% of it, comes from the university or from scholarships that are on the university web site.
